Observatory Pub Hunters Road

oldMohawk

gone but not forgotten
I was collecting some Keith Berry photos to put in an additional album and looked at the sign on the Observatory Pub and there appears to be a spelling mistake. I'm seeing 'Observatatory' instead of 'observatory' Perhaps I have missed something here that might be well known to everyone else !

crikey phil you are right...i used to live round the corner from that pub..maybe the sign writer had spent just a tad too much time inside it lol

Thanks Lyn, I've had a look through the forum pub pics to see if there were any photos of the 'Observatory' and whether anyone else had noticed but saw nothing. Seems strange it has not been mentioned before.

phil i am round that way a lot and never noticed that before...google street walk shows the 2 different spellings...how strange..i am over that way tomorrow will take a better look...the pub is still open

lyn

Yes you are right Lyn for the name on the fascia. But the name above on the board has the right spelling. I wonder if the signwriter got paid for this. Perhaps John Knight would care to give his opinion of the sign (remembering children might be viewing)

yes mike 2 different spellings...keith berry took that photo years ago... very strange that the sign has not been corrected....

I had seen that the sign was different to the fascia. The photo is in a group of colour photos taken in 2006 when Keith Berry was apparently experimenting with photo editing because some of the images are stitched panoramas.

Hi Lyn, I notice on GE that the fascia round the other side of the pub has the correct name. When I first noticed the strange spelling I wondered whether it was some sort of 'in-joke' for the locals and regulars at the pub.

This is a picture I have, the only one actually.

morning phil...you may well be right about a joke for the locals i just cant believe that i have never noticed it before...must go to spec savers soon lol..

thanks for the pic terry i do have a much older one somewhere..

Phil

It's obviously a mistake as the sign above it is correct, they must have let the apprentice have a go without checking the work. I just thought it wasn't one of yours was it John, if so perhaps you should have sampled the wares after doing the sign?

Another big mistake was the painting over of the Observatory mural over the entrance to the pub. In 2012 in the Ghost signs thread we predicted it's days were numbered. And lo and behold by 2015 ..... gone. Viv

That's a good point Lyn. Maybe someone has that stashed away somewhere. We can live in hope .... Viv.
