On 6th June 1975 the Euston to Glasgow sleeper train derailed at Nuneaton with loss of life
Yesterday marked the 50th anniversary of the accident
The original sleeper train loco 86242 failed at Kings Langley and had another locomotive attached to the front 86006 to take the train forward with the other loco shut down. At Nuneaton there had been track work where some rails had been replaced by temporary rails and a speed limit of 20 mph had been imposed. On the approach there was an oil lighted warning board and at the commencement of the temporary restriction another oil lighted warning board. The first warning board was unlit and as the train approached the driver thought the restriction had been taken away, but when he reached the second board he noticed the restriction board was lit. The train was travelling at 80 mph and despite applying the emergency break the train derailed causing death and injury to those on board.
