Up until a few months ago all I knew about my grandfather Harry Nightingale (1896 – 1931) was that he had been a railway porter at Birmingham New Street Station before the war broke out, he had fought in the Coldstream Guards and he died at a very early age. Then I found out about his parents Henry and Eliza who both had died before he was demobbed. Now I find that (according to an 1881 census Henry was in fact one of 5 boys and 3 girls and his son Harry would have had a number of uncles and aunties to turn to when he came home. They were all based around Camden Street, Pope Street, Myddleton Street and Carver Street at the turn of the century. In fact Henry died on the pavement in Pope St in 1917! Some of them were brass casters and die sinkers. Does anyone know who they would likely have been working for just before the turn of the century in this area of Birmingham? Has anyone else been looking for Nightingales in this area?

Re: Harry Nightingale

This may help... My Granddad died in 1935, on his death cert' it states he was a 'Metal Tube Worker Caster' at 1 Camden St.
So if some kind soul could look up the address in Kelly's Directories, then that could be at least one firm your reallies may have worked for.

Re: Harry Nightingale

Thanks for that, Pom

I have gone back to my files to check Henry's addresses whilst he was a brass caster and they are all around Camden Street though I am not sure where Hanover Street was (I suspect it has disappeared under a great big flyover!):
In 1881 brass caster living at No 8 Carver Street
In 1892 brass caster living at Hanover Street
In 1896 brass caster living at Back 282 Camden Street
In 1902 brass caster living at 42 Court Camden Street
In 1917 brass caster living at 29 Myddleton Street

I am new to this site - can I access Kelly's direct online, through this site or is it hardcopy at the Library?
