Anything to oblige. I have a copy of the " pub" photos which states that it is 18-19 Mrs Simnett, outdoor. so not sure that it was really a full pub

In the 1911 census, Lucy Florence Delaney first wife of my grandfather Walter Vanstone is shown as living with her parents Delaney at 16 New Street, Aston Manor. If anyone has ant pictures of New Street I would be grateful and also a locatory map would be interesting. It is noticeable that my grandfather is not traceable on the 1911 census. Lucy died first quarter 1914, grandfather remarried 2nd Quarter 1914. My grandmother was a dog breeder and won prizes, how can I track down newspaper reports etc, her name was Sttie Amelia Vanstone nee Corbett from 20 Queens Road, Erdington.

Hi Bob,

This link will give yo a start:

If you do a search using "new street aston" including the quotes, you will find there is a thread already, unfortunately the pictures are are not sharp due to photobucket issues.

I'm sure when Lyn (Astoness) sees your post she will be able to help.

Can't help with the map but our resident expert Mike Jee should be able to when he sees your post.

hi bob i cant seem to find the new st aston thread at the min...if i cant locate it by tomorrow i will see what photos i still have and post them on here for you...one of my best friends at school lived in new st..

My granddad, Horace Grainger lived at 4 New Street, Aston according to the 1911 Census. He would have been about 5 at the time ;-)

Hi Bob, re your grandmother Ettie Amelia... have you tried the digital newspaper archives on Find My Past? It's one of my favourite places for finding this sort of info out. I had a quick look and found this extract similar to the one Brasscaster posted. I also found this death notice that I think may be Ettie's as well? It is from the Birmingham Mail 6th September 1941.

The newspaper archives take a bit of searching, and trying different variations of names and search terms but they can prove to be a great little treasure trove of information. Well worth trying!

Thank you very much for the info contained in your post. I will now look up the newspaper archives.

Re-posting the image from post #10 but without the photobucket watermark. Some interesting detail about H. Roland & Co., never moved very far from their initial premises in Alma Street.
