Hello everyone,

I have worked for Newey and Eyre , Electrical wholesaler for the last 34 years and still going strong ! The Company was established in Birmingham in 1926 . When I started in 1989 the Lichfield road branch, Aston was 001 , Wolverhampton branch 002 , Dudley 003 and so on as acquisitions etc grew around the country !
I have tried to research but can find no information on the origins of the company as we approach 100 years . Would be interested to know who Mr Newey and Mr Eyre were and what happened to them etc if anyone has any useful info would be greatly appreciated?

Today it’s owned by a French company , Rexel co uk and still has a few hundred branches in the UK .

Many thanks

Tony Peace

According to Grace Guide the Company was incorporated as WH Price and Newey in 1926, and in 1928 the name
was changed to Newey and Eyre.

I started with Newry and Eyre in 1977 as a trainee in the old flour mill that is now, or was before I moved to Bulgaria, the land that my former tailors Matthew Alan sits upon, commonly known as Matalan. I have very fond memories of the staff that worked there. I made a huge mistake by moving after four years, but I had my reasons. I went through every department in the warehouse before being allowed 'upstairs' after nine months onto telephone sales. On my first day I put the phone down on the chief buyer at NG Bailey because he came on swearing. He rang back and when it was established that it was my first day, he was very apologetic and our future chats were centred around football, then business. I ended up as 'Fatman's Batman's, the Service Manager being Fatman. This allowed me to go and do anything as long as I had a piece of paper in my hand and said that I was doing a job for 'Fatman'. It also meant that I had to fetch and take paperwork to Donne House or Tricorn House (that is what my memory is saying) every day. Finally, I scored a hat trick in a football match, one from inside my own half, between Birmingham Branch and Head Office, we lost 3-4!
