This corner was described as the "Quadrant", but where on New Street ? Was it at the junction with High Street ? Or at the junction with Corporation Street ?

In Kelly's 1896 George Houghton is shown at 134 New Street .... on the corner of New Street and Worcester Street, that is named Quadrant Chambers.

Thanks Geoff. Roughly where the Rotunda was later built then. And Lloyds Bank had their (1960s) premises underneath the Rotunda.
I notice the 29 and 29a bus stop was once outside Lloyds. I think that stop must have been moved further along towards the Odeon ? (to the right, but not shown in the photo).

The bus stop was probably moved after the bombing shown in the photo, Viv. I remember the stop outside the Odeon as a youngster but during WW2 we generally shopped at Lewis's or Greys as there were shelters in the basements there. After 1944 I guess we chose Corporation and New Streets
Me too Alan. Mum and I used to catch the 29/29a in Corporation Street (opposite C&A) or outside Greys. I remember the Odeon New Street stop, but we rarely used it.
Lyn, that's a view of New Street. Looks about 1940s/1950s. On the far right is the Exchange Building (the dark building). Far left is C&A Modes. Nice photo.

Yes Lyn, , C&A was in Corporation Street !! But there was one in New Street at one time.
That nicely designed entrance to King Edward House has survived (next to 'Avon' on the B&W photo)
The Co-Op used to have it’s offices in King Edward House ( Human Resources etc )
The entrance to The Tavern in The Town / Yard of Ale Pubs and later an All you can eat Chinese Buffet were to the right of the picture.

The modern, 1930s King Edward House must have attracted 'modern' business outlets at street level, such as this 'Milk Bar'. Late opening hours ! Think I'd have liked this place.

1960s New Street. The first image shows preparatory work for the Rotunda (left), and the second shows the emerging Rotunda building in 1965.
Remember how New Street would be clogged with buses, and shoppers ! It seems the old Midland Bank building - left - was at this time (1975) their overseas branch. This must have been because the domestic side had set up at the bottom of the ramp on the opposite corner of Stephenson Place and later becoming HSBC.

Just look at what it's turned into today
well john i come under disabled and elderly and sometimes use a mobility scooter..another reason why for the past 12 years or so i avoid the city centre...will birmingham ever be finished ? very much doubt it

I use a walking stick myself and struggle with walking/balance as it is, without having to try to negotiate those barriers they have put up. I don't think they gave a thought to those of us that aren't as mobile as we were, when they decided to put them up. I guess the idea is to stop cars getting past the barriers, but there are plenty of cars that make it into the city centre elsewhere, so I don't really see the point of them lyn.
yes i can understand your difficulty john..over the past few years you will read many of my posts saying that the powers that be just dont care about the elderly folk...it almost seems to me that they are just trying to eradicate us...when i was young and used the city centre a lot for work and leisure there was a nice mixture of all ages..sadly this is not the case now

He looks like a very wealthy doctor! I'm currently looking at another Freer - or possibly this one – who was at a vestry meeting to elect churchwardens (which was a lot more exciting and politically important than it sounds). A 'Mr Freer' rose to second the candidate James Brown (not the singer!), the favoured candidate of the church authorities. He faced John Winfield, a radical and founder member of the Birmingham Political Union. Freer is described as 'of Digbeth'. I don't think this would be the same person, would it?
