Grace I also have new data that gives me soldiers details ie. Where Battalions were in 1914 and 1916
not 1915 and 1917-18
So can tell you about the days leading up to a mans death in the Great War

Hello Cromwell,
My man died on 21 March 1918 so unfortunately it doesn't seem as if you can help me. He was in the Manchester Regiment.

Grace
A book you need is the "Manchester Pals" only a few quid tells you a lot about the Regiment and lists a lot of the soldiers with Pictures

Grace
Second Thought give me his name and I will look for you to see if their is anything relating to him

Thank you Cromwell.   His name is Herbert Haigh who died aged 25. His service number is 352148.

Now this might seem a bit confusing but does it say on the Medal... Manchester Regt
because if he lived in Salford Manchester he would have been in the Salford Pals 15th (Service Batt.)Lancashire Fusiliers

Just Found out Grace it was The Manchester Regt 9th Batt as he came from Aston under Lyne Lancs O0

Cromwell..What a wonderful amount of input and time you've put on here, an absolute pleasure..well done.

Thank you Cromwell, that's him. Isn't it great that we have Cromwell on the site Kandy? Everything he writes is worth reading, a man with a passion for recording the past and making sure no one forgets.

Grace,
I think the info that "Cromwell" passes on to us is incredible,
he is a mine of information, and is only too willing to help

Grace
I was in Manchester last week and went into the Cathedral to look your man up in the Roll of Honour books for the Manchester’s. There is no 9th Battalion
In 1914 only 1st and 2nd Batt in France
1916 on the Somme 2nd, 11th, 12th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th
No details in the Roll of honour for Herbert Haig so it looks like he is not recorded
Explanation could be if he had no grave his body could have been found well after the war and communications from the CWGC got lost or mixed up
So needs futher investigation which I will check for you

Thank you so much Cromwell. Please don't go to a lot of trouble, although I do hate the idea of Herbert sacrificing everything and no record of his death.
The research I am "doing" is for a very elderly lady who is the niece of Herbert and when I mentioned what I had found so far she didn't even know of him. Lest We Forget eh? I suppose it could be that Herbert's death affected his parents so much that he was never mentioned, so now It's up to me to find all I can about him eighty eight years later.
I appreciate your help Cromwell.
