Edmund Street seems to have existed at least at the beginning of the 1800s. But part of today’s Edmund Street was called New Edmund Street, which didn’t come into being until around the 1870s. I think New Edmund Street must have been cut as an extension to the existing Edmund Street.
Looking at landmarks around Edmund Street and Livery Street, I think “New Edmund Street” would have been located at this junction. For example the Old Contemptibles pub was once the site of the Albion Hotel (see advert below). The Albion was redeveloped in the 1880s and the building we see today was a result of that redevelopment.
Prior to the Albion the site was occupied by the Adelphi Wine Vaults which existed from at least the 1850s until the early 1860s and had a Livery Street address. So at this point in time, New Edmund Street did not exist.
Does New Edmund Street appear on any maps ? Viv.
