Nelson Statue 200th Anniversary

You can see here how the cannon were used as the bases of the lamp posts.

The navy sold off thousands of these cannon - and many were used as bollards. A lot of modern bollards look almost the same - so another example of something from the navy crossing over into civilian life.

Tacitus amazing I had no idea they were used as lamp post bases. You are right some now look exactly like these!

The lamp part fitted on here

Dave - well spotted!

And at the other end you can see where they have been drilled for the gas supply to feed in.

But things aren't that straightforward - how could they be!

When the statue was erected there was no gas supply anywhere near the Bull ring. So I believe that for the first 10 years or more the lamps were probably lit by some kind of oil - then we know for sure that they were later modified to take a gas supply.

Hope I am not speaking out of turn here but personally I would like to see the cannon permanently displayed down at the statue (inside the railings). After all that is where they belong!

But I wonder what the Political Correctness police would make of that one??!!

I don't know why it is - but every time I look at the above picture of the statue my eye is drawn to the character on the far left.

Just a quick snap, will have to post all the other photos when I get back
to Brighton.
Try as I could I didn't see any one with a badge on.

I hardly think whey would hold any view on the matter - why would they? After all we resisted the French attempt to get us to change the name of Waterloo Station and we still refer to the English Channel don't we?

Never to sure who they [the PC lot] are any way.

I can see Dave, but i can`t see his camera! they are usually joined at the end of the arm!!. Len.

Wow well done lads you made the papers! As did our Pro Civitate! Well done all!

Dave

I am quite certain that it is.

You can see the similarity here.

I saw this little brochure for sale a couple of years ago - decided to buy it as a souvenir of that short time I had scudding (or other such nautical terminology) around Portsmouth Harbour and across to the Isle of Wight.

Was a good fun time. First time sleeping in a hammock etc. etc.

Stern view as she is now.

Back to original name - Trincomalee - and fully restored - up at Hartlepool. Sad to say I have never been to Hartlepool since the refurbishment was completed.

Don't feel too bad.

You can start counting down the days to next year's Trafalgar Day ceremony.

Knowing Stephen and the other folks involved it will be even bigger and better than this year.

And be sure to get along to the Wellington afterwards.

Somewhere I have got an artist's impression of the only time that Nelson and Wellington met. I'll try and look it out sometime.

And of course they ended up as near neighbours in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral!!
