Needlemaking in Worcestershire and Warwickshire 1640 - 1940 by Richard Churchley. From humble beginnings as a cottage industry on the Worcestershire/Warwickshire border in the 1640s the needle industry grew until it employed many thousands of people in the Redditch, Studley and Alcester area by the late 19th century. Richard will discuss how the trade grew and how it changed through the use of water power and mechanisation and how it diversified into making fish-hooks and fishing tackle.
