been doing a bit of research in the Aston churches and have researched the following: Saint Matthias, Saint Paul's, Saint Silas, Saint Stephens, Saint Clements.....
Thanks to all for your suggestions, I will go with St Mary's for the moment. Looking at the other posting, St Silas was miles away, so was St Paul's, so I shall try St Mary's for starters. I did consider St Stephen's, but not sure how near to Phillips Street that would be. Aston has, at its peak, about 20 churches, but Aston was a huge area, that is why I needed assitance.
Thank you Bernie - I already have this, but it wa s akind thought. Aston was a huge area and it is the nearest to a particular street that I was after.
hi shortie...just looked at my map of aston and there was a church just 2 streets away from phillips st..near the corner of st stephens st and newtown row...i am presuming it was called st stephens church but would need to be checked out....here is the map for your reference...
Thanks Lyn - this seems to me to be St Stephens, which might just be the one. Thanks. Another church on my list to check for births. by the time I have finished this list, the library will be closed and I shall have to wait................................ LOL
Lyn is it the one taken almsot from the side? I think I have that if it is. One of my rellies from Cheltenham married there, it would be nice to have a good one, but pics of St Stephens are quite rare.
That's kind of you to have done that, thank you very much. I know very little about Aston, not having ever been anywhere near it apart from Trinity Road in the 1960's, is this the church known as St Mary's Aston Brook?
is this the church known as St Mary's Aston Brook?[/QUOTE]
Hi Shortie,
Yes it is St Mary.s, Aston Brook. As Ray says it really depends on which end of Phillips Street you mean. If the Newtown Row end then it is St Stephens. If the Aston Road North end then it is St Mary's. If in the middle then ????????
Chris,
Somewhere along Newtown Row was a dance hall known as "Stevo's,"do you know if it was something to do with St.Stephens church.I have asked before but no one seemed to remember it.
Hmm, I cannot remember exactly, but somehow the number 18 comes to mind. Must check. PR's would be cheaper than buying birth certificates, by far, so that's the way I am hoping to go.
