Loved opening the locks for the bargees when I used to fish at perry Barr locks, soon as we heared the chug chug chug of the barge we rushed to the locks.

I keep missing the Birmingham programme when Quest repeats it. It's presenter Alan Herd can also be seen in Challenge Tommy Walsh on the same channel.

hi elbow and edd ;
I have not seen this programme but i must watch it as i was into these cannalls as a lad in one form or another
especial up the cannal feeder way back in the fifties and so on ;
and we would go up to ralphs the old man of the lock keeper at smethick whom lived in the lock keepers house along side of the cannal
i had abit of a smile on my face when you said you liked opening of locks we we had a passon of opening them locks when we was in a gang roaming the cannals from one end to the other from smethick down the union cannal to into the old basin of gas street and play up the old orinional habbinants
of those little tiny house of the basin of gas street we would mess around and un lease one or two barges and hey would chase us off but we would run
into that long and black darkened bridge where they used there feet to walk the barges under and out of the complete black bridge
we would be up to alsorts of things on those barges a huge gang of kids unleashing a boat and floating down the union cannal [ these was coal barges not peoples barges that lived on them
we even went to the horse stables at smethick and got chased out of the yard where they kept the big shire horses and the owner running after us and the big shire orse in front of him he was trying to stop the horse and he was shouting abuse to us ; our little hearts was pounding when that big horse was charging after us beleive me but i have a great intrest in the cannals as i said i really grew up on the cannals in one way or another
i made a pact with morton that one day we will walk the cannals down our way in worc ; just opened up
i wonder if any body else fancies a stroll along the cannals of the drotwich to worc section of the cannals the views are brilliant
best wishes ASTONIAN

I've seen some of the other episodes, when I randomly switched Quest on. Set it on Series record. Think it was made in 2006.

Think there was also a series called Narrowboat where Alan Herd restored his narrowboat!

Quest also repeats The Salvager and Le Salvager.

And they have brand new episodes of Salvage Hunters every Monday at 9pm! But Quest also repeats old Salvage hunters episodes.

Alan started off at Gas Street Basin. Went through Worcester Bar. Then headed through part of the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal. Think he then took the Digbeth Branch Canal. As he got off at the Proof House.
He eventually joined the Grand Union Canal in Bordesley and headed towards Solihull (all in the first episode). It was 2006, some things have changed since Mr Herd's visit to Birmingham!

Broad Street Tunnel

Farmers Bridge Locks

Under Snow Hill Station. Alan mentioned that this was the main line to London (well the Chiltern Mainline not West Coast).

Gun Barrel Proof House - I didn't know that a canal went near here. But know that Proof House Junction is nearby for the railway above

Grand Union Canal near Great Barr Street, Digbeth

Grand Union Canal in Bordesley - near the Middleway

In South Yardley (they didn't show this bit, but sure that Alan Herd went down here on his way to Solihull)

Also Olton (again not shown in the programme)
