Mystery Inscription.

On my Grandparents grave in Witton Cemetery, there is an inscription that reads "William Davis, killed in France, 1916." None of the surviving older members of the family could remember anything about this man. After several weeks of trawling the internet, I found that he was 10049 Pte William Davis of the 8th Bn. South Staffordshire Regt, and that he was the husband of my Grans sister Nelly. (maiden name Mather) At the time he was killed they were living at 1 house 36 court Brearley Street. He is buried in the Guards Cemetery at Lesboeufs. I was honoured to have put a real person to a mystery name carved on a gravestone.

 I'm so pleased for you Barrie, I know how it feels to find that kind of information out.
I have a young man in my tree that I never knew about and I'm still not sure if he was my Dad's Uncle, or cousin.
No one in the family ever mentioned him as I was growing up, sad to think these young men gave their lives in that war and no one took time to pass on the information and remember them. Rupert is buried in Key Hill Hockley so the family could have visited his grave, but no one ever did.
Well he's not forgotten any more and even though we're in NZ, he is remembered every A.N.Z.A.C Day 25 April.
