My Favourite Musical

Bernard67Arnold

master brummie
With the obvious interest in the subject why not have a new thread?? most of us seem to have a
favourite musical or show, tell us about, without doubt mine has to be "South Pacific". The Americans lead the way I think but I also liked some of our early ones by Noel Coward, such as "Bitter Sweet" and Ivor Novello also wrote some memorable shows Bernard

I'm not sure if Gilbert and Sullivan "fit the bill", Bernard, but here's a song from Trial by Jury by the Australian Opera (sorry about the beep at the beginning).

Bernard that too is my favourite. I went to see it with friends on my sixteenth birthday paid for by my parents. Jean.

I don't know why but I've always enjoyed Seven Brides for Seven Brothers - catchy songs I guess.

I love South Pacific:). I am going to see my nephew next month in Footloose at his performing arts school in Melton Mobray. This might become my favourite or am I biased:rolleyes:!

Guilbert, one of the best ones I have seen is also Les Miserables. But, one for the memories for the songs I loved was Dreamboats and Petticoats. That really was going back to my era and I knew all the words. If you havent seen it, and it comes your way, please go and see it and sing along (and even jive in the aisles)

my favourite by a mile is les miserables. i love going to the theatre and have seen most musicals and enjoy them all very much - but in my opinion les miserables is in a different league to the rest :)

I loved Fiddler on the Roof, also i enjoyed n one some years ago with the late Harry Secombe - was it Olivier ???? Eric

In 1961 when they decided to film the hit show "The Music Man" the studio head Jack Warner wanted Cary Grant
for the role, however in the end it was given to Robert Preston, a former "B" movie actor with little or no muscial

background but who had made a Big hit in the stage show. I thought in the film he was absolutely sensational
Shirley Jones also was great, I loved the 76 trombones and other brass Bernard

Most studio bosses wanted a name "film" actor for a lead in musicals, no matter how good a person had been on stage.

Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews (before she was famous) had been appearing in My Fair Lady on stage and both had been a sensation.

When they came to make the movie the studio did not want Julie Andrews and wanted Audrey Hepburn.

Rex Harrison was furious and almost did not make the movie because Julie Andrews had not been chosen, but Julie Andrews convinced him to take the part.

Of course Juluie Andrews then went on to star in Mary Poppins and Sound of Music. Can you imagine if she had done My Fair Lady as well. what a trio of films to start your career that would have been.

As someone who has 'trod the boards' for a good many years, my fave musicals must be:

Mikado
Me And My Girl
Cabaret (the movie with Lisa Minelli - fantabulous!)

Those are just my top three. There are many others I could name.

Big Gee

just got to be 7 brides for 7 brothers ..brilliant songs and feel good musical...but have to say one of the best ever was Wallop Mrs Cox ..all about Brum ..if it does come around again it is WELL WORTH seeing

My favourite for the music score is Oliver, but my overall top musical is Blood Brothers. Seen it 4 times.

I love all musicals but if I REALLY have to choose one it has to be "High Society" :) we watch it every Christmas Day on video.

Al's favourite musical is 'My Fair Lady' - he saw it in London and then he took me to see it in Birmingham. One of my favourite is 'Seven Brides for Seven Brothers - another is South Parciffic. Miriam.

Lovely thread and I have made a note of two to watch at sometime. Big Gee maybe a trip out by forum members to watch one of your shows?. Jean.

Froth, you've blown me away! Thanks for that (WWRY apparently came "down under" a few years ago, but I missed it.) :1019:

I am not sure whether this film would class as a musical, but Yankee Doodle Dandy takes some beating. Also, Saturday Night Fever and anything film that Fred Astaire was in

Went to see 'Barnam' with Michael Crawford in London the week Al and I were married, throughly enjoyed it. It was different as all the action and change of scenes of the musical was done as we watched - the part of 76 Trombones was excellent [I thought] as all the cleaning lights of the theatre came on and all the trombonists were amongst the audiance. So very colourful. Miriam.

Hi Jean,

Erdington Operatic are putting on Orpheus In The Underworld at Sutton Coldfield Town Hall from 2 - 6 November. Full details elsewhere on this forum. Unfortunately (some would say 'fortunately'...) I'm not in it, because I'm still recovering from the aneurism surgery on my leg, and am a bit lacking in mobility. But a good idea all the same, Jean. Orpheus is a good show, definitely worth seeing. I'll be going. Sad to say amateur operatics is going through a hard time just now, largely due to falling interest amongst the younger generations, but also down to increased costs, especially theatre and orchestra hire.

Best,

G
