How sad. No 90 Moseley Road was the family home of my Gt Gt Grandmother Mary Ann Millward. She came from Coventry, the daughter of a Farmer. Widowed in 1874 in Meriden Street when her husband Robert, a drayman, was killed when a large barrel rolled on him, and with 7 kids to support, she took in sewing to make ends meet. After he died, she moved to 94 High Street, Deritend for a while, then to 90 Moseley Road circa 1900, where she set up her Tailoring Business with all her family participating (except my Gran who ran off with a n'er do well Scrap Metal dealer, Granddad Reuben). She was very resourceful and went up to London and won a contract to provide new red trousers for the Cavalry. After she died in 1902, the business was merged with Goodmans, a well known tailoring firm in the town at that time, and it became Millwards & Goodmans. Her granddaughter Jacqui Millward (Cotterell) is the current Secretary of the Bham & Midland Society for Geneology and Heraldry and guests on this Forum occasionally.
The Busines was very successful and she made a lot of money, but left it to the wrong son, Frederick Owen Millward (the guy in the middle of the group) who by then had left tailoring and moved into Pubs. He was landlord of a few local Moseley and Sparkhill Pubs, and then the Black Bear, Tewkesbury and the White Hart, Charlbury in the Cotswolds.
The photos are of Mary Ann, The House, and the family and staff taken behind the House.
