I hope he is alright I remember his mom was confined to bed and Billy used to help her really good lad I still have photos of the football and cricket team like I say really enjoyed my time at Montgomery StreetI was i touch with Billy Woodall until a few years ago. His contact ceased so I don't know what happened.

I went to this school in 1963/ 65 and lived in the old Bolton road ,408 , thism is where my school life began. . To then go to Dennis's road of the lady pool road, surname Carolan a Mrs askew comes to mind as a school teacher.

My gran and grandad who were the Greens lived at 412 Bolton Road till they had to leave due to demolition

I loved the trip to the farm in your fathers car as I'd never been in an open top car before. He was the best headteacher and everything useful I learned was from my time at Montgomery.It was with great interest and pleasure that I read through this thread about Montgomery Street school and anecdotes about my father Don Brazier and the other teachers who I still remember.
I too have a set of the Living Together books. I remember the car pictured in the books and the Volkswagen Beetle car he later owned. I know he greatly enjoyed his many years at this school which he helped adapt to the needs of the changing community over the years.
When I went to school one morning most of the children had had their 11 Plus results and he asked if I'd got mine, I told him our postman always came later in the morning so after an hour or so he drove me to our house so I could check the post and it was there, I'd passed and I never forgot his kindness in doing that for me.
He knew my parents well because of the Living Together books, they were in them too.
My father came with me to the House of Commons along with the other children from the books and your father to celebrate the publishing of them.
Robert Maxwell was our host and we had lunch there then took a trip in his Rolls Royce to Hamleys where we were given £25 each to spend on anything we wanted.....that was a lot of money in 1965 !!
I remember the carbolic soap where I'm pretty sure it was Mr Brazier twisted a bar of pink soap in half, if I remember right the boys didn't know why they had been called on stage.Re: Mr D.B Brazier headteacher Montgomery School till late 70s
I think I remember this or a similar incident. I was born in November 1955 so started the school I presume in September 1960. I have vivid memories of a boy or boys on the stage in assembly sucking soap to "clean their mouths out" after being caught swearing. Imagine that today!! There would be outrage.
I think they had been outside the classroom of Miss Ashmore the day before, when she heard them.
I remember when one winter, we had snow in the top playground and we had created a slide close to the top gate, I remember Mr Brazier sliding on it with a few of us lads.

We came across the fantastic series of We Are Friends books (except missing the last 2 books unfortunately ..!) from a charity shop in Hebden Bridge about 7 years ago, and have had great fun reading them to our children at bed times over the years
We'd always talk on great detail about the characters and have given them all their own personalities, Mr Short, Mrs Rose, Charles, Bimbla, Mary, Abdul and Winston and all the other people/characters in the books. They are brilliant little books.
My son is 11 now and after reading Harry Potter books for over a year, we decided to pick up the We Are Friends books again and have found such joy talking about the characters again and what they might be doing now... So we did a search... Well I never thought of finding a thread like this. What a great read this is!
I'm not from the area, or the school, but the school and the characters really resonate with me and take you right back to a simpler time. Thanks to all the contributors!
