Missing father? Morgan Research

Joanna

master brummie
I am trying to do some research on an Alice Amelia Morgan who I know lived in Birmingham in 1898 at the age of 21 when she married Frederick George Beard, however I have no clue where she is from and also on the marriage certificate there is just a line where fathers name would normally be.

Now we were told by my partners dad that he thought there was something funny/some secret somewhere but he was unable to tell us anymore. (This was before I discovered no father was listed)

What reasons would there be for no father being on the certificate? Does anyone have any ideas about how I can try and find out more?

Hi Joanna.

Sorry to say that the usual reason for the fathers name being omitted, is because the person was illegitimate, there are of course other reasons, but that is the usual one.

If you have the marriage cert, do either of the witnesses have the same surname as the bride?

Hi Barrie

I thought that might be the case. Unfortunately the witnesses have different names altogether. I have looked up these people on the Census for a clue, but alas that was no good!

Joanna, I would think with a name like Morgan Alice would originate from Wales. There are a large amount of Morgans in mid Wales. See if you can find her father on a census from her marriage certificate what was his occupation? was it common in Birmingham?. If you post a bit more info there are some wonderful detectives on here.

Hi Joanna.

There is an Alice Beard married to a Frederick Beard on the 1901 census. She is 24 he is 22. Alice is shown as born in Rowley Regis, Frederick is shown as born in Netherton. They have 2 children, Nellie 2 and Robert 2mths. Also living with them is Gladys Devonport who is a boarder.

Could these be yours.

barrie.

Sorry Joanna, its a red herring. Frederick Beard married Alice Davenport at West Brom, in the same year and qtr that Frederick George Beard married Alice Amelia Morgan in Brum. But what a coincidence.:)

Thanks for the help!

That's such a coincidence Barrie!

Moma P, that's the problem - there is no name for her father on her marriage certificate and all I know is that she was 21 in 1898.

I think this could be Alice in 1891. . I haven't found her on any other census yet. Her mother Nancy is shown as widow. Outdoor beerhouse and provisions dealer. Frances Lewis is shown as Nancy's niece.

Just to add that a Charles Morgan age 47 died in Dec qtr 1888 in Aston.....plus the reason his name is absent from the certificate is due to him being deceased.

Hi, thanks for that.

I am not sure its her though, reason for this is we have her death certifcate, she died in 1949 and on the Index it puts her at age 74 which would mean she was born 1875 wouldn't it?

Also meant to say, I have checked the Indexes for 1875 but can't find anything. The closest I can find is an Alice Amina Morgan born in Aston. What's the chances of them getting it wrong on the index?

Charles Morgan married Nancy Caroline Williams in October qtr 1874,his wife Susannah having died in March 1874.

There is a birth of Alice Morgan Oct qtr 1876 Aston ref. 6d 426,sometimes the second christian name was omitted or even not given until baptism.
It would be worth getting the birth certificate, using the criteria that the parents must be Charles/Nancy,and if this one is incorrect then you will not have to pay.

How come I won't have to pay?

Also, there appears to be a few avenues to go down but I don't know how I could confirm it is actually her?

Joanna,if you send for any certificate listing exact facts that certificate should contain ,if you give reference and the facts do not match there is no charge and your cheque will be refunded.

Do you know her childrens names sometimes they tie in with names in the family such as using eg.Nancy for a daughters name or second christian name.

Ah okay.

Her children were Nora, Ruth, Alice, Frederick, Eugene. I can't find anything that links to these at all.

I can order different certificates but I still won't know which one is her as I don't know when she was born or who her parents are.
