Hi I have already found the street where I was born but would like to know if anyone has connection with Mills. My dad William (Bill) was born 1934 and all history is very sketchy. I recognise alot of the place names on this site but do not know any specifics. Thanks in advance.

Hi jd

I found you and JM in the birth register and your mothers maiden name was given as Broughton but i am blowed if i can find a marriage of William Mills to Broughton or the other names you mention. Have you got their marriage certificate or have access to it as this would provide this information for you and it will have the names of both your grandfathers on there. Perhaps William was not his first name, he might have just preferred that to his given name.

Mills - Marriage Certificates

Thank you. I have found our births but I do not have marriage certificate for my moms marriage(s) to my dad only her husband before. I have found my dads birth in Nov 1934 but with moms maiden name Jones. My sisters and I thought we could remember seeing a marriage certificate as remember seeing previous marriages dissolved but cannot find details marriage either. My mom is 75 this year and not in the best of health I was hoping to find some answers myself without asking questions all the time. I am expecting some unsavoury answers but would still like to know history. Thanks for your help though.

Hi jd

Had another look through marriages but only found this one, what do you think --

Lynn L Broughton/Jack McCarthy 1st qtr 1958 Ashford 5b 58

This is Ashford in Kent according to the volume number (5b).

Marriage Certificate update

Good timing just logging off :-) This marriage certifcate and my moms birth certificate is all I have at moment but her dads name is missing and I cannot find any trace of who might have known her with name Broughton. Very frustrating... Will log on tomorrow and have another go. Thanks for your help - appreciated.

Hi jd

If fathers name is missing it usually meant they was illegitimate, going by the age of your mom i assume this is her birth --

Lily Broughton mmn Broughton 3rd qtr 1933 Birmingham 6d 796

And this your father --

William L Mills mmn Jones 4th qtr 1934 Birmingham 6d 194

I am going to try and trace those elusive marriage registrations now armed with two match sticks to make sure i don't blink and miss anything plus a little something for my throat, well that's my excuse.

Marriage Confirmation

Hi Bren, hope what you took for sore throat helped. I dreamt about this last night. I dreamt remembering Birmingham Registry Office - havent checked if there is or was such a place yet .... also remember seeing date 197.... because I remember thinking that my brother who was born in 2nd quarter 1970 Gary would have been only one born in wedlock as it were. Did I imagine this ? I am recalling this info from when I was around 12 years old....

Bingo - Marriage Certificates

Hi Bren, curiosity got the better of me. I have just found marriage listing for my dad to my mom but there are two ? 2nd qtr 1971. One with moms maiden name McCarthy and another which states he married a MILLS in the same quarter ? any idea why this would be or do you think two seperate :cool:people.

Hi jd

Well done, i didn't look that far, only went to 1970.
There is an entry for your mom in both Mills and McCarthy and two for your father, someone must have been taking something for their throat when they filled the register in LOL, all the reference numbers are the same --

William L Mills 2nd qtr 1971 Birmingham 9c 726
Lynn L McCarthy 2nd qtr 1971 Birmingham 9c 726

You could send for all the Birmingham certificates by post or online, £7-00 each then if you want to research further back in time the details contained in them will help, parents names, locations etc.

Here are your brothers details
