Milk Street

I have recently acquired the death certificates of my G. G. G. Grandparents, George Jones (d. 1862) and Jane Jones nee Price (d. 1874). Both died at 18 court Milk Street having previously lived in Digbeth Road (the census just says Digbeth) and prior to that Cheapside.

The maps that I have don't show the courts and may be of a later date.

Does anyone have an early map of Milk Street or any Photos.

i am surprised that there was at least 18 courts as milk st is only a small street..hopefully someone can provide you with a map to confirm...i will have a look in my files for any old photos if you give me the years of birth of your rellies i will check the census again

I don't know how the courts work, but I do know several ancestors or cousins lived in and around Milk Street, attached are the death certs and a census from 1861. It is assumed that the moved to Milk Street around 1861 and George died in 1862. The details on the census match other records I have, Jane was born Billingsley, Shropshire. George was a Brick maker and had a daughter called Ann Jones. I have a very high confidence that the couple that died in Milk Street are who I think they are. Jane died by accident so there was an inquest, something I will be trying to attain. Either way both died at 18 court Milk Street, unless I am reading it wrong. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, thank you

yes definately court 18 and janes death cert say court 18 house no 1..hopefully someone can come up with a map showing the lay out of the courts..

To answer your question on where / when he was born, the 1841 census suggests he was living in Cheapside and born in 1804 in County (assumed to be Warwickshire), the names of the children match my research but the first 4 were born in Kidderminster, my G.G Grandfather was Thomas.

The 1851 census shows he was still living in Cheapside as a Bricklayer and his wife was born in Bridgenorth and all the children in Birmingham, again my G.G Grandfather was Thomas.

The 1861 census show him living in Digbeth, assumed Digbeth Road, again he says he was born in Birmingham and his wife Jane in Billingsley which is believed to be correct.

However, there is circumstantial evidence, through Ancestry/MyHeritage DNA matches that suggest he and/or his family originated in Worcester / Kidderminster and may have been born in 1798 (work in progress.

The 1880s OS map was compiled giving some detail. Earlier maps were not very detailed , and, unless compiled for a special purpose, did not list numbering or court numbers. However, the 1895 directory mentions an establishment in court 18, which was between .nos 56 and 64.. the map below from 1880s shows where I think court 18 was from the position of nos 56 and 64 (obtained form another map and directroies), court 18 is marked in blue.
For Lyn, note milk street can be seen from the map to have 21 courts (at least)
