I am looking for harriet smith's (maiden name shenton) hat shop on cape hill.
husband george smith worked for smethwick drop forge.
Their son leonard smith, a clerk (my grandad) is supposed to have met linda fenn (my grandma) at the shop where she worked as a miliner.
They were married 26th dec 1934.
I am told Harriet had a house full of oil paintings which she had accepted as payment for hats instead of money when times were hard for her customers
please is there any info on this hat shop?
i don't even have a name for it. is their any way of finding out if it was harriets own shop or a family business? in the 1901 census from aston manor, she is 19 and is listed as a tailoress and her mother as a pearl button sorter and her sister as a pearl stud sorter, so i think the shop didnt exist that far back .

From 1940 to 1956 there was only one milliner in Cape Hill, Mrs Gladys Dean at 132. This compared to `1933, when there were 3 (including Mrs Dean). She had gone by 1964

The other two were No 10. Mrs Elsie Craddock and no 24.Arthur Dixon. I'm afraid i've no idea as to how to find out more.
