Memories from the nursery

Mayfield

Burbury Brummie
A lasting memory of being in nursery school in Highgate in the 50's was the obligatory spoon full of cod liver oil.............. the memory and taste will haunt me 'til the day I die.

The above posts made me smile and John you also brought back memories of
being dosed with various over the counter health remedies on a regular basis growing up.
On a general level my brothers and I were fed cod liver oil in capsule form. Also Halibut Oil capsules which I had a great liking for. Saturday nights were dosing nights at this level. First, we had the cod liver oil or halibut capsules followed by two yeast tablets. We actually lined up for these. Years later when I left home to live in Canada I regularly got reminded by my Mother to take yeast if I was under the weather!

If we had a cold then more medicine was added to the above in the form of Virol....malt extract... a spoonful wasn't bad. I am sure many on here remember that. Vicks and Mentholatum were also slathered on your back and chest if you were coughing too much. If we had an upset tummy Scotts Emulsion was brought forth. Can't think of any others except if we had a scratch or cut, the Dettol came out followed by a slap on of Germoline or Zinc Ointment. Cotton wool and bandages were in common use and I didn't mind having a bandage on display at times.

I had the posh cod liver oil. Mine had malt in it. Love the taste of cod liver oil and sesame oil is very tastey and i love the smell also. Funny lot arn't we. wouldn't it be boooooring if we all had the same tastes. Thats not only food either. Jean.

Jennyann, I used to love Virol, it was like runny toffee. I never minded my spoonful of that. Also used to have Scotts Emulsion but wasn't too keen on the fishy creamy taste! I also remember the Cod liver oil and Halibut oil capsules. Was there an antiseptic cream called Zambuk? My Dad used to swear by Wintergreen Ointment for his rheumatism.

In Gozo they have a remedy for sore throats. I's an oil with careb in. I loved it. Wintergreen had a very strong smell but my dad also swore by it Judy. Our pharmacist comes from India and brings something back from India. It's the nearest thing to wintergreen and does the job. Bit expensive though but you nead only apply a little. Jean.

This is a brain teaser. I remember being at nursery school but I can't recall any details apart from playing outside in the yard on the ropes and climbing apparatus. Oh and getting a present from the teacher of a little metal aeroplane! Apart from that my mind's a blank (too much Brew XI in the meantime probably)
My nursery is still there, corner of Dudley Rd and Winson Green Rd. and here's the very yard on which my feet and a good few thousand others once trod!

Glaciermint. I think it is now a neighbourhood office now. My daughter in law covered for ilness there a few years ago. Jean.

Cod Liver Oil and Malt still use it from time to time, my lads won't come near it

My mother used to dose the various concoctions to me. Enjoyed the spoons of malt that, I think, I had daily.

The thing that does stick out in my mind were the beds, that were placed in a line, in the playground on those hot summer days. Our having to have the compulsary sleep in the afternoons. Cannot recall the number
in my nursery class but imagine it was quite a feat for the teachers to lug these beds out for us from wherever they were kept.
Will.

I never went to nursery as my aunt looked after me while mom bundled firewood for a job. I was too poorly to start school at five and was almost six when i did start. I too remember those naps in the afternoon and Miss Taylor telling us to breath in deeply and smell the rose when we sat up. I do remember peeing myself all over the floor and could not stop crying. Ah that reminds me going to do a bit of bowling on the wiiiiiiiiiiii. Bye. Jean.

I used to have an Irish Setter (Red Setter) and I gave him a cod liver oil capsule every week without fail. This gave his coat a beautiful, healthy sheen.

That can't be said for me though - my head is depleated of follicles..... I do have a shiney head though?
