McCarty or Carter Family

I am looking for any information re the McCarty family that came to Birmingham in the early 1800's from Dublin Ireland. Malachi/Malachy/Mallick McCarty is the father of John c1815, James c1829 and Malachi c1831. John married Maria Barton in 1838 at St Chads RC Church and Emily Pratt in 1850 at St Peter & St Pauls Church in Aston. Amongst their children was Thomas born 1860 in Summer Lane, St George, B'ham. He married Alice Moore. Thomas used the name Carter when he married. William 1892, was born to Thomas and Alice. He used the name McCarty up until he married Sabina Griffin in 1911, when he changed his name to Carter and continued to use it for the rest of his life. All William's children from two marriages use the name Carter. William's sister Emily also used both McCarty and Carter throughout her life as her maiden name on her childrens birth certificates. Emily married Frederick Johnson.

It appears James McCarty was convicted of larceny in 1846 and sentenced to 7 years transportation to Tasmania, Australia, but then appears back in England in 1856 married to Hannah Smith. Both John and James' occupation was 'Slater'.

I would love to hear from any descendants of the McCarty family or anyone who may have any information about them.

Could this be part of the family your looking for in 1841? The place they were living seems to be a boarding house as there were a number of other people living there too... all with differet surnames and trades, mainly male but a couple of females and all from (outside of County) or Ireland.

Thank you for that. Food for thought. The first three males would fit in well, I will have to look in to it. I too am a brummie kiwi. I was born in Yardley and have lived in Christchurch NZ for the last 38 years. We are over in the UK to have a holiday as well as research family history. We are off to Dublin in a couple of weeks and then to B'ham a few weeks later, so will try to confirm all the information I have so far.

Well I never.... I too have lived in Christchurch for 40 years (I married a Kiwi form Lyttelton)... I was born in Aston and lived in a few areas around inner City Brum... I was in the UK exactly 3 years ago and also went to Dublin to do family research ... LOL We could possibly do a meet up when you get back....
 
What a small world. Yes, a meet up would be great. We will be back in August so will be in touch. What name were you researching in Dublin?

In the last couple of days I have found two other researchers from my McCarty family, so things are moving on quite nicely. Just need to confirm the information in Dublin if I can - fingers crossed.

Wow that's great news. It was lovely to meet Pom when she came to Brum but how great that you two can have a mini meet in New Zealand!!
 
Maggie, I look forward to meeting you... the name I was looking at was 'Trotter' from county Leitrim (Irish: Contae Liatroma) on the West Coast and the Southern border of North and Southern Ireland.
However because of it's location many of the old records were destroyed during 'The Troubles' over the years...
