Matilda Mayes

I think Ann had that as a maiden name, sister perhaps of Eliza Besenwaite who married James Preston Mayes who I think is James Mayes, thomas's brother as their mum was Margaret Preston. Ann also married William Long.
This is the marriage entry for Eliza who I think may be Ann's sister?
Eliza Bassingthwaighte

I wondered if Ann was Eliza's daughter (illegitimate)? Eliza married in 1845 and Ann born abt 1843 so much younger. If James Mayes was the Father that might explain why some children were registered with mmn Maisey

How do you know. He was named on the cert but that doesn't mean he was there. Not sure how they sorted consent for minors.
ah so true...I just assumed but you are right as sometimes even deceased fathers are entered onto the certificate. her dad was put down as James Snell, bricklayer but alive or dead or present or not, no idea.

Ann Bessingwait so perhaps Ann was her daughter

I did look for a James Snell brickmaker on censuses but drew a blank which was another reason I wondered about Ireland.

It says Mrs Eliza Mayes fish dealer! so was a relative of Thomas living with Sabina?

I know a ton of irish records are lost and I did look for Sabina under the irish collection but nothing so far. Its literally as if she doesnt exist

I think you may be right as it would explain why some of them are under that name

Was he the son of Eliza Morton and Thomas (the second "wife" of Thomas)?

Just trying to check this out and I am not convinced Thomas's son Robert died young.

I'm answering my own question here - this is the son of Thomas and "Sabina" born 1863 and died 1864. Question has Sabina died at or soon after the birth and Thomas was already with Eliza "Morton"?
Or is this Eliza the wife of James?

Thanks. With so much info gone I hadn't got all the key facts.
I don't think it says the relationship of Eliza to Robert on the burial record so it could be an Eliza rather than Mother Sabina

A little recap.

Robert Maisey/Mayes/Massey (c1800 - 1864) was born in Leith, Scotland. Margaret Preston (c1800 - 1863) was born in Kings Lynn. They married 7 Jan 1821, Great Yarmouth.

Children include...

Elizabeth Preston Maisey 1821
James Maisey 1822
William Maisey 1826
Edward Preston Maisey 1833
John Maisey 1835
Thomas Maisey 1837
Elizabeth Sophia Preston Maisey 1839

Thomas Maisey married Sabina Snell in 1860 and had Eliza (1861), Robert (1863) and Matilda (1867). By 1881 Thomas is with Eliza Morton and has more children. Sabina has disappeared.

On the 1861 census Thomas and 2 of his brothers, James and John, are living in Bham. All are in the fishmonger trade.

Also in Bham is Ann Kilmartin, the illegitimate daughter of James' wife, Eliza Bassingthwaite, whose husband is also in the fishmonger trade. I think she was reg. and baptised as Georgiana.

Finally in 1861 there are a John and Hannah Loodmer, both born Norfolk, in Bham, whilst with Robert and Margaret back in Great Yarmouth is a William Loodger.

Thomas had other children with Eliza Morton below. Sabina and Thomas also had John May/mays 1865 I think if Robert is 1863. John was the son where there was an inquest into his death. Don’t think Thomas and Eliza Morton married but children from 1875. So 8 yrs gap from Matilda. Ann kilmartin also married William long on marriage of Sabina and baptism records. Robert Jeffries and Elizabeth guest on Matilda’s baptism record. I think Edward Barrett/Barnett on Eliza’s. Can’t find baptism for the sons of Sabina

Spouse and children

John Mays/May was born after Robert in 1865 to Sabina and Thomas. You sent me the newspaper article then Matilda born 1867

I hadn’t noticed Robert and Hannah loodmer. Nor a William so thanks.

Baptisms still there for Eliza and Matilda.
I thought if Sabina was irish or catholic that her son John would have also been baptised. I tried looking for records using different spellings but cant find any. Also I think its the 1871 census where Sabina is down as Louisa

Sabina was listed as Louisa in 1861.

And the big question for me, apart from what happened to Sabina, is where are those Maisey brothers that came to Bham in 1871?

Matilda and Eliza are in a home but Thomas reappears in 1881 so is still alive.
James' wife is listed as married with a son implying James is still alive but where is he?
There's a possible death for John in 1875, so if that's him where was he in 1871?

Hannah Loodmer is on the 1861 census with husband John and daughter Hannah T M Gardiner? so is that Hannah's previous name perhaps as daughter is aged 10. May have no relation with the mayes/snell family and living at 71, Barford Street, birmingham. FMP have no record of Robert or hannah or william. Comes up with zero results. Hannah from Yarmouth. I will check ancestry

Will take a look. I doubt if Robert was baptised given he died 4 days old
I thought it said Robert was 9 months. The birth and death reg were in different years.
However, I still couldn't find a baptism just the burial at St Josephs.

Okay just looked up the baptism for John. Dont have a full baptism record like we did for Eliza and Matilda. Have attached what I found. Think the church is the same. However, on this one the mothers first name is not put down. Father is Massey. Doesnt say anything other than that. Dont know who Edward is. I do think potentially there was an edward on Eliza's baptism record but this edward looks different. Molloy?? thats an irish name I think. Sabina and thomas had their names on the two girls records
