The 1881 cencus, when William and Mary Jane are at 2 court 8 house Milton Street, shows William as a metal turner born 1854. If the 1854 is correct, as opposed to 1851, William's parents are very likely Benjamin Mason (born 1824 Kings Norton and a metal roller) and Mary Ann Mason(nee Harris, born 1829 Sutton Chaney Leics.) Mary Ann's mother is Elizabeth Harris (born 1798 Sutton Cheney Leics).

The 1881 cencus, when William and Mary Jane are at 2 court 8 house Milton Street, shows William as a metal turner born 1854. If the 1854 is correct, as opposed to 1851, William's parents are very likely Benjamin Mason (born 1824 Kings Norton and a metal roller) and Mary Ann Mason(nee Harris, born 1829 Sutton Chaney Leics.) Mary Ann's mother is Elizabeth Harris (born 1798 Sutton Cheney Leics).

I spoke to another family member yesterday who is researching the same branch of our family. The marriage details you gave are correct and she already has a copy of the certificate. She is sending a copy of it to me. The details on there are as follows;
William Mason age 26 a brass furnisher living in Milton Street married Mary Jane Ball age 21, no occupation given, also living in Milton Street on 10th April 1878. William's father is a John Mason who was a Dipper. Mary's father was a Thomas Ball whose occupation is whitetrader (or something like that, she couldn't read it clearly).
They were married at St. Stephen's Church.
William Mason couldn't write and just made his mark. The witnesses to the marriage were a Richard Moreton and an Elizabeth Mason who again just made her mark. I am wondering whether Elizabeth Mason was William's mother or perhaps a sister.
Co-incidentally I found living next door to the Mason's on the 1881 census was a Thomas Balls and his family. I wonder if these were Mary Jane's family? Given that in 1878 both William and Mary gave their address as Milton Street. What do you think?
So I now know that William Mason's father was a John Mason I now need to find William living with him on a census. The search goes on ............

Now you have William's father as John, I have found then on the 1871 cencus in Aston Erdington, Clifton Street. John Mason 56 (b. 1817 B'ham) and a foreman silver dipper. Wife is Catherine 52 (b. 1819 B'ham) William 18 brass founder (b. 1853 B'ham) and yes a sister for William, Elizabeth (b.1857 B'ham).
Haven't checked the Balls yet, but that looks right for the Thomas Ball, next door to them. He is a fire iron maker, which can also be described as a white smith.

Children are listed as Rebecca b1846, George b1849, William b1854, James b1856 and Elizabeth or Betsy b1857

Very likely Jules as on the 1871 cencus John and Catherine also have a son James age 16. So those all tie in. I should look for William's birth first and send for that one. Ann

Yes Jules, Because there are several, I should apply to Superintendent Registrar, Birmingham Register Office, Holliday Wharf,
Holliday Street, Birmingham B1 1TJ. Send a cheque for £7.00 made out to Superintendent Registrar and enclose a stamped addresses envelope. Ask for the birth cert. for William Mason, born approx 1853/1854 with parents John and Catherine Mason. Make sure you state the parents, then they will only send you that one. And if they can't find it they will return your cheque. I found them on the 1861 cencus St George district 32 ct. 10 house Brearley Street, and then John was a brewer and the children Rebecca age 15 and George age 12 are there.

Yes Jules it is Ancestry I use, and quite a few others on here use it as well. Why don't you take advantage of their free trial It was a month, when I did that, but I think now it's 2 weeks. You have to give bank details, but so long as you cancel just before the two weeks is up, you won't be charged. But if you like it, you can do it a month at a time, if you wish. I really enjoyed doing my tree on there, you can add photos and really bring it to life. Give it a try, nothing to lose. Let me know if you get the certificate. Birmingham are very good, you usually get it back by return of post. All the best Ann
