Hi, currently I am resurching my Great Grandfather Frederick William Wilkes who was a carpenter/joiner, I believe he had his own business but can't be sure. On line I have found record of a premises at 68 Mary Street which was rented by a Frederick Wilkes from William James Morley in 1896. Does anyone have any pictures of the area which might show signage or is anyone familiar with the above names. Thank you for reading this. Paul

Frederick Warren Wilkes is listed at 68 Mary St as a plumber in Kellys directory from the 1895 edition to the 1910 edition. The year is publication date and probably refers to the year before. In the 1912 edition the occupant is Mrs Sarah Ann Wilkes, also listed as a plumber, so presumably he has died and she has taken over the business. Previously it was a beerhouse (cannot be sure of the name ,but it looks like The Royal widow on the 1891 census)
There was a Frederick William Wilkes in the same sort of period, but he was a greengrocer at 123 Great Coimore St

Thanks for the information, I think the Wilkes in Mary St was a different person to the one that I'm interested in. The greengrocer lead is interesting though because my Frederick William Wilkes's father William was a grocer according to some census records.

Thanks Mike, I think this Frederick William Wilkes is not the same person who I am resurching, but the reference to a greengrocer is interesting, the F W Wilkes who is of interest to me, his father was listed as a grocer, so quite a coincidence.

I'm new to the site and I too am researching my family history. I know that my mother's family lived at 152 Mary Street from about 1936. My Grandad had a small brass founding business at the rear of the house. His name was Herbert Henry Baker. This map doesn't go far enough down Mary Street to see number 152 and I wonder if you have one that would show this.

Hi, can you please point me in right direction for any pics after early 1900s of Mary Street, Balsall Heath. My dad was born nest door to what is called Snickers. I'm certain it was The Eagle before. After seeing google maps, it was next door to the pub. Obviously demolished, think its a care...

Hello, I am looking for 130 Upper Mary Street where my great uncle Edgar was born in 1893. His father was Herbert William Godwin Tanner who was Clerk of Works, presumably overseeing a building construction in the area. Looks like current numbers of houses for Mary Street, south of the Coach and Horses pub, have changed, going from 166 upwards.

Many thanks for your reply, but I think the street numbering has changed. Upper Mary Street is shown on the map published in 1889, but by 1905 the "Upper" part of the name has disappeared. His birth certificate says he was born at 130 Upper Mary Street Balsall Heath, district of Kings Norton.

Between 1892 and 1895 the house numbering changed from sequential to odd on one sde and even on the other.
Coach and horses was #149 before the change and #162 after. At that time Upper Mary Street was changed to Mary Street.

i have been told by one of our map experts mikejee that 130 became 208 shown on map below
I am also trying to find out which building(s) my great grandfather (Herbert William Godwin Tanner) was Clerk of Works for when he was living in Ballsall Heath when his son was born in 1893.
Initially I thought locally but the dates don't seem right for the buildings in the neighbourhood such as the library and public baths. By 1895 he was in Stafford working on the Technical School and The General Infirmary, so he wasn't in Birmingham that long.
I guess he may have been communting, there seems to have been a tram network in Balsall Heath.
I think he may have been in Ireland in 1891 as he cannot be found on the UK census, and his brother had gone there to work as an architect.
Perhaps I will never know, but I am just trying to fill in some gaps, I know what he worked on when he moved to London in 1899, such as the V&A.
If anyone has any pointers, I would love to find out more!

he may have been in ireland in 1891 but providing i have the right one he married in somerset in sept 1892 age 30 i have his marriage cert from ancestry which says his occupation is clerk of works..looks like he died in london in 1948.. i cant find him on any census years living in birmingham on the 1921 census he is living in london with wife and children..his place of work is recorded on the census but you most likely already have this info
