Mary Morton Chapman

I received this from our library researcher today which I thought you might like to see

I've done quite a bit of research on James (and MMA's siblings. I was tasked with researching the Chapman's when I first started at Allport). If Ann's journals are to be believed, his wife Eliza returned from VDL with an alcohol problem and some sort of illness that caused to be bed ridden for sometime. They struggled financially as James went from job to job and was arrested a few times for unpaid bills. Their children, Annie and Jimmy (or Jemmy) spent a lot of time with their grandmother, Ann F. and their aunts and uncles, while their parents were unable to care for them. Their son was baptised twice. Once at Green Ponds while they were still in VDL and yes, again Birmingham. I actually have quite a bit on their children.

It is still a mystery to me how he ended up in Texas just before his death.

It would be nice to confirm the Texas reference on an actual document rather than just the transcript. Mistakes can happen and it could be somewhere closer. I had relatives who lived in Gibraltar, which turned out to be Gibraltar, Buckinghamshire.

I agree, I am really only comfortable once I see the original

Dear Friend,
Thankyou so much for taking the time to send me this information and your interest in my work. Now I have a confession to make I am dealing with so much material I have quite forgotten the context of Mount Pleasant! So can you just remind me. Sorry I know its somewhere I just can't place it.

kindest regards

Ian

You first mentioned Mount Pleasant in this post here...

...Ann St was also mentioned and in later posts I found an article that said that Ann St was also known as Mount Pleasant, so the conclusion was that this was probably the Mount Pleasant (amongst the many) mentioned.

The Coventry Road Mount Pleasant seems to be of a later date and unlikely to be relevant.

Hi,
Thankyou so much! That is certainly interesting to find a street called Mt Pleasant and especially to see the old shop.
Thankyou also for taking the time to remind me. You have no idea how many rabbit holes I have gone down in this research, all interesting but I sometimes get lost.

I do appreciate your interest.

kindest regards

Ian

Hi MWS,
I hope I find you well. This is very embarrassing but I cannot find the record of James death in Texas. I have tried Ancestry, find may past and family search but to no avail! I had hoped to go back to it but stupidly forgot to copy in the link.

I need to do a citation in the text - so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

I don't think there was a citation unfortunately. Janice looked and there were just transcripts - the one you've listed and another that lists the death as Texas - no scans, not sure where the originals would be.

I have gone back to where I found the transcript of the record on Ancestry and clicked on source

As you can see below Henrietta has confirmed Janice's information which is great for my book.

I would like to place you in the acknowledgements of the book. I could write something like 'My thanks go to the wonderful people who frequent the Birmingham History forum and especially to ...... whose assistance was incredible'

I would really like to include your real names or at least first names if possible. My email isPlease feel free to write to me and suggest your preference. MWS warned me a while ago not to make my email public so I will delete from her in a couple of days.

Thankyou again and I look forward to hearing from you

Ian

Dear Ian Broinowski,

Thank you for your email. This is a reference to our probate collections which have been digitised and are available through www.findmypast.co.uk. I have taken a look and the administration papers which were proved on 13th July 1849. It does give a date of death of 11th January 1849 and states that he is from Texas and lives outside of the diocese (Quoad Bona). I do note that there are several other references on FindMyPast to a James Evett Chapman in the Birmingham area, including a marriage to an Eliza Hart in 1828, which may or may not be of relevance.

If you do not wish to download a copy of the probate from FindMyPast, we can provide a copy. The cost would be £8.00.

Kind regards,
