Marks & Spencers

Mike, I can only imagine what the queues will be like especially with the extra discount peel cards. M&S have 600 stores onshore in Britain. I am assuming that the 2 million items available for a penny will be divided between these stores. The larger stores would probably have more items I would guess.
Be interesting to see what happens.

Thanks for that Jennyanne needed something to chear me up today that did and so did the two £25.00 premium bonds that came through the door this morning.

Re: Marks & Spencer's

A photographic history of Marks & Spencer's on Birmingham's High Street since the turn of last century.

I think the last photo dated 1956 is the same building that is standing today, but perhaps some one will be able to put me right on the matter. Was the store bombed during the last war? Why did it go from being a three storey building to a single storey buiding between the years of 1938 and 1954?

As the photos are not in sequence, please run your mouse over the photos to see the dates.

Phil

Super photos PMC but I have a couple of questions.
Firstly, pics 1,2,3 and 5 I can understand but not pic 4. It seems completely out of "synch" with the others. What is happening under the sign behind those railings? Also anyone know what the building next to M & S is? The one with G, E and N painted on the side wall. Finally how long before the alley on the right of the M & S building disappeared?
Thanks
David

I believe Marks & Spencers in the High Street was badly bombed during WW2 and was rebuilt.

I wondered if it was the same site on picture 4, as "Birmingham shops & shopping" states that, after the 1941 bombing, M&S traded on the YMCA site, but , in 1940 the next shop over Castle St (which I assume is the alley you refer to) is George J.Mason, which fits with the lettering on the wall. Castle st was still there in the last Kellys in 1973

Photo 4 mystifies me a little bit also, but I think it is definitely the High Street because the building in the background with the clock is the Co op.
