Silvermere was definitely a secondary school in 1965. A friend of mine went there and left in about 1970. So it must have have been a teacher training college after that date? When used as a college it was no longer a school. Sorry no specific dates. You may find this link interesting. I didnt know the author but knew his two younger brothers as I lived in the same road. My mom and uncle also went to this school too. Remember my mom taking me to an open day there and showing me where an unexploded bomb lodged on the staircase in WW2.

Mr Barlow was the Headmaster for the Juniors and Miss/Mrs Wild the infants.

Can anyone remember any more of the teaching staff?

At the junior school, the names I recall are: Mr Bates, Mr Wimpory, Mr Cullen, Mrs Best, Mr Roberts, Mr Barnes, Miss Williams.
At the infants’ school: Mrs Cornforth, Mrs Cadman

In year 1 juniors the teacher 1.1 was miss Cockerill and 1.2 was Miss Rudall (took us for crafts - enjoyed punishing kids by pulling their hair)
Resident pianist in juniors was Mrs Teague.
Infants headmistress was Mrs Wild and in juniors the headmssters were Mr Barlow and Mr Thompson.
Mr Wimpory previously taught at Silvermere.

Just joined. I went to Mapledene, I must've only been there for a couple of years as we moved away in '78. I do remember Mrs Kendall at Mapledene, anyone remember her? She had it in for me from the start. I think she was Welsh? Did I dream her up?

Well, it's taken me a while to reply to this - I had no idea such a forum existed and only came across it yesterday. The last line from Spargone above prompted me to dig out a photo from our family album of what appears to be a Mapledene male voice choir in cowboy gear - probably around 1957. Our choir director (whose name escapes me) was a fan of Burl Ives, so we sang "Big Rock Candy Mountain", and 'Chivalrous Shark".
So, back row, l to r, David Hughes, Ivor James. last on right Brian Astley. Front row, l to r, Julian Partridge, MIchael Smith, Roger Macfadyean, unknown, yours truly Christopher (Chris) Rowan, Jeffrey someone.

It's been a long time since I thought about Mapledene, so it was good to find my memories refreshed by some of the posts here. Messrs Wimpery, Cullen, Bates, and course Mrs. Best (and Miss Hay).

The lady with the guitar was surely Miss Parker, teacher of 1/3 at the time. Some familiar faces here but no recollection of ever seeing you guys in action. In fact the only performance that I remember on the stage was that of a visiting show that brought their own mini-stage as most schools weren't as well served as Mapledene.

You were there and I wasn't but I think the first boy on the front row has the look of James Madden who was in the same class as Julian Partdridge.

A bit of Mapledene that 'no-one' noticed as it was above the Junior school entrance and we nearly always came in via the playground. I think it shows children being 'enlightened', seeking 'knowledge', (a sunflower in a book) and 'learning', the Aladdin-style oil lamp. (The old school road sign had a flaming torch, same idea, replaced by two children). A classic statement, before today's 'mission statements' and 'values'.

This autumn will see the 75th anniversary of the opening of Mapledene. Are there any plans to celebrate this?

In the 50th anniversary year there was an open day for the general public which attracted a lot of ex-pupils.

During out time in this class the Mayflower II made it trip across the Atlantic and we put in map pins each day. Margaret Newton's brother was a sailor and he bought her Japanese dolls in glass cases which she brought in for us to see. One boy's father was a fishmonger and they had found a baby shark, about a foot long, which he showed to us.

Great photograph. I was in Miss Hay's class the following academic year,1957/8.According to my copy of the Mapledene School Magazine for 1958,Miss Hay left at Christmas 1957 and was (if I rememeber correctly) replaced by Miss A.Boaden.Two names that I rememeber from my time in Class 1/1 were Ann Baker and David Farmer.The school magazine mentions some of the names in the photo who were by then in Class 2/1 - Christopher Rowan,Margaret Bennett,a Sheila Hurst and Alan Johnson.I left the school in 1958 when my parents moved from Sheldon. Happy days!
