Despite this school and research centre being located outside Birmingham (in Lichfield), I think it's worthy of mention for its pioneering work in the field of dyslexia education. The Principal, Dr Neville Brown, was a former teacher at Marsh Hill Boys Grammar Technical School.
As a very commited teacher and leader, he was ahead of his time in providing relevant education for dyslexic children. Maple Hayes was the only Department for Education approved dyslexia school in 1984. He was Principal of the school until at least 2003.
