Malt Mill Maker

fergie

master brummie
I have a relative with the occupation of Malt Mill Maker.  Father and son both had this occupation they lived in Aston, Deritend, Bordesley in 1851.  Wondered if it was anything to do with Beer/Ales or even sauces.   Where would there be a Malt Mill?

Ta very much I guess it must be a brewery of sorts....... well theres lenty to choose from I suppose.

they actually constructed the mills for the millers there were a few mill makers in Birmingham

Thank you please excuse my ignorance, i was just assuming that they were working at a brewery. On the 1841 census John Bartlett (the same relative who was a malt mill maker) my great greatgreat grandfather was a steel mill m = maker? According to BMD he died in 1858 aged about 70, if the age of 63 given in 1851 is anything to go by.

I found this information when I visited the Central Library

According to
• Wrightons Directory of Birmingham 1839 there was a John Bartleet Malt Mill Maker at 10 Court Deritend.
• Jones Mercantile Directory of Birmingham 1865 there was a John Bartlett Steel Mill and Hop Press manufacturer 10 Court High Street Deritend (probably John Bartlett jnr)
• Post Office Directory 1875 John Bartlett jnr Hop Press Maker 39 High Street Deritend
• Hulley’s Birmingham Directory 1881 John Bartlett jnr Steel Mill Manufacturer 39½ High Street Deritend. Home Address 7 Arthur Street Deritend which also shows on the 1871 Census.
• Kelly’s Directory of Birmingham Streets and Suburbs and Court Sections John Bartlett jnr Hop Press Maker No 39 High Street No 9 Court. High Street Deritend 73 Digbeth to High Street Bordesley.

I believe this is to be my ggg grandfather and his son. I thought I did really well but I was guided by all the expertise on this site.

 Well done fergie, it's a good feeling when you start to make real tracks in to you own families past, no matter what you find out. O0

I have since been back to the library and found this picture advert in the Wrightsons Directory of Birmingham 1835 for John Bartlett Malt Mill Maker 10 Court Deritend which was a lovely surprise.

What a lovley find for you Fergie.

Interesting to see the mills on the advert, they look like a type of hopper don't they. I'm sure the chaps on here will tell us.:)

How exciting for you Fergi, its a lovely find I am so pleased for you.
