Lush Upholstery

Radiorails

master brummie
I remember a large advertisement, high up at roof level, (late 40's, early 50's) for Lush Upholstery. This was in High Street - somewhere near The Co-Op and Bodega premises.

They were a furniture store with emphasis upon upholstery products. I wonder if others recall this?

It is quite possible that they also made the upholstery for coaches. The coach seating works where on Warwick Road, B11 - wherever that is? The MD of both companies had the same name.

I believe the new Lush shares only its name with the original.

The original Lush works were on the Warwick Rd about 200 yds along from the Mermaid pub. Afew of the lads from Formans Rd school
went to work there as upholsterers when they left school in the late 40s, and early 50s.

Thank you very much Ken for locating the Lush upholstery works so precisely. I know where it was now as I frequently passed The Mermaid when traveling along the Stratford Road when going to the City. The owner/MD, as far as I recall was a gentleman named Rowland Hartrick. My knowledge of the firms' existence dates from the early 1950's - although I was still at school at that time.

Maybe the Bromsgrove connection dates from a time when the company changed hands?

You are right about the name,it was up on the outside of the works. The name Lush appeared as a small logo,it was easier to say than Rowland Hartrick.

We had this enquiry from Arthur Hartrick ( who is now a member )

Hi there, I am trying to reply to a post that is related to Lush upholstery. I am the son of Roland Hartrick and would like to make contact with the people who are discussing my fathers business. They may have known my father..I may even know them. If you can help that would be most appreciated.

Kind regards,
Arthur Hartrick

Hello Arthur,
My father, Ernie STEMP, worked for your father, Roland, at Lush in Warwick Road and later at Blucher Street, the new factory that your father had built.
This was mostly in the 1950's and I think that my father was the sales manager but mainly on the coach seating side. As you will appreciate, I was very young at the time and so many of the memories of that time have become tarnished with age. However, memories there are and I would love to discuss some of them with you, but perhaps not on an open forum.
If you are interested in doing so then my e-mail address is rogerefstemp@hotmail.com.
As a small aside, to test my memory, did your father once own an American, left-hand drive, Buick with blue tinted windows?
Best wishes,
Roger STEMP
