Yes I remember Mrs Breasley, the needlework teacher. I used to go to her house to have piano lessons from her daughter before she went off to University. Although I was absolutely rubbish at needlework, Mrs Breasley was really kind because she knew my talents lay in a differnt direction! Not so the other needlework teacher who thought I was rubbish and didn't hesitate to say so. Can't remember her name though.

Just found this site about Longmeadow girls school. It was good to hear all the names of the teachers again. I remember Miss Featherstone being ill she retired but died soon after. I was in Mrs Jacobs class before I left in 1969. Mr Grey always called me Wardle which annoyed me. In those days everyone was expected to be a typist and it has been handy even though I did not become a secretary. I remember going to Yorks wood with Mr Babbington and you were not allowed to stand on the plants! Do you remember Miss Smith the english teacher

When you left Longmeadow were there some girls who played a prank and tied rope around the staff door and then went and rang the fire alarm.They were then expelled on the last day and had to leave school premises.I remember Mr Bailey,Miss Jones,Mr Babbington Mrs Young,loved her history classes always talked about her family and then there was no time to do any work.I think i had Mrs Hall for cookery.
 
I went to Longmeadow Girls School during 1958/1962 and remember Miss Featherstone and some of the other teachers mentioned very well. I also walked from Hall Hays Rd usually with my friend called Pat. Prior to that I went to Hillstone from the very first day it opened, I think it was about 1952/53, the headteacher then was called Miss Stitt. Funnily enough I ended up having my wedding reception in the Infants Hall.
Does anyone remember Alderley Boys because Longmeadow Girls used to get together with the boys school each Christmas to put on a Christmas play, the main character was always played by Paul Smith who ended up playing Benny in Crossroads. Does anyone remember him? Not sure if he realised at the time but he was the heart throb of our school!!

Hi Jen, I also walked to Hillstone & Longmeadow from Hall Hays rd. Your maiden name wouldn't happen to be Rowbottom would it & did you have a sister called Carol?

In your email you mentioned Paul Smith.I was at longmeadow later but new of him and his family through my mom who worked at the co-op in Kitsland road.

Hi Casey, I remember the Co-op well infact I still visit Kitsland rd at the hairdressers. I knew Paul also through my mom. His mom & mine grew up together in Nechells, they shared the same yard. Infact, some years ago my dad had a drink with him at the Legion Hrst Lane.
 
When Longmeadow Girls School closed down the school photographs were handed into Shard End Library. They have been placed in ring binders by the Local History Society group and if anyone wishes to view them ask at the counter and they will be taken out of the cupboard for you. The photographs include school trips abroad, combined panto shows with Alderlea Boys and Paul (Benny from Crossroads) is on them, cookery classes and school photographs in general. Well worth seeing, especially if you were a former pupil.

Do you have memries of the camp-site at all. One of my friends used to go to that school her name was Valarie Summers back then.

Hi Julie, This is a bit late as I'm a new member to this site. I left Longmeadow in 1962 and remember York Wood as our Cookery rooms ran along side the enterance. Just inside the gates to the wood you had sort of Totum Poles & I beleive that some of the heads on these poles came from the original Lewis's Store in Birmingam (how true that is I'm not sure). There was a house just inside the gates where the caretaker lived with his family, infact his daughter also went to Longmeadow. On occasions we were allowed to have our art lessons in the woods but every year they held the Jamberee's (think thats how you spell it) and the place was littered with Boy Scouts, which was one of the reasons I joined Longmeadow's Girl Guides....ha ha.

Whats it like there now it has been years since ive been around there.Mom worked on the bacon counter at the far end of the shop among other duties there,she must of been there 10 years plus.I remember her being there when i was in Junior school then the shop closed i think it was 1979-1980 when she finished work there.Mom use to go to that hairdressers.Just before i got married i went there to try out some hair styles and i was advised to have a perm to help put some body in my hair, Big mistake, had to wait 8 weeks before it grew out.
I loved going down Kitsland Road on a Friday night and as you walked down you got the lovely smell of the chips cooking from the chip van that was parked just outside the flats.

Hi Casey,

The hairdressers have changed hands a couple of times since then, they're quite good now. Kitsland shops are now very bleak. Where the chippy was is now houses and flats but I wouldn't like to live down there. Longmeadow has also been knocked down and has houses on the site of the school but the playing field still remains. It's certainly not the same as it used to be. I enjoyed my day's at Longmeadow when miss featherstone was headteacher and Mrs Bilston was the sports teacher. It was an age ago but I still have fond memories of the place. It's a pity it was all brought to the ground. I also loved the cookery and home economic lessons. D'you remember when they'd ask you to bring a hankie in to learn how to wash and iron? I remember when they told us we'd be cooking stew, the family were looking forward to having it for tea but the gravy was that thick you could stand a spoon up in it. Oh those were the days, funny how you don't appreciate them at the time.
 
My mom went to this school. I remeber as a child going past on the 55 bus and the school was no longer there, but my mother would always tell me about it. She must of been there between 1955 and 1960. Her name was Gillian Parsons if anyone remebers her.

Hi I'm a bit late in replying to this post - only just seen it (5 years too late)!!!!

My sister and I also walked from Hall Hays Road, Shard End to both Hillstone and Longmeadow. I left Longmeadow in 1965.
 
I was a member of the 1st Yorks Wood Scouts in the 50's and as I lived locally I spent many happy hours in the woods,this included weekend camps.This experience has left me with a severe aversion to baked beans. All we lived off on those weekend camps was baked beans.Our scout hut was in the field alongside the avenue of gargoyles that stood either side of the main drive.The wardens name was Mr Bedney and we used to buy wood for our camp fires from his shop.There was also an outdoor swimming pool.With regard to Longmeadow school,I attended Alderlea which was a mixed school until Longmeadow was built.We used to go to Longmeadow once a week during our lunch time for ballroom dancing lessons

Yes, I was there then in Mrs Young,s class. Does anyone remember Patsy Lane. Pamela Baughan and Gill Rogers to name but a few. I remember Mrs Robertson, the school bully, she flung a bunch of keys across the classroom which hit me on the head. I have no fond memories of that school, the bullying was rife, not with the girls they were brilliant, but I'm sorry to say it was the teachers. Any excuse for detention, the ruler, there favorite was writing hundreds of lines. I must not talk in class. I must not look out the window. The last year was awful, much of it I spent playing truant and visiting the museum and art gallery in Birmingham. My dinner money I spent on the deisel train . One day I went home the usual time and the school board Inspector was waiting for me at my house with mother. They were the worst times of my life back then, and today they wouldn't get away with it.
 
Hi I married a girl called Ellen Sage we have been married now for 45 years and June Pickering was our bridesmaid . June has now moved out of brum . My sister in law is Pat Downes who also went to Longmeadow she now lives in church Stretton Shropshire

Hi i was looking threw the messages and i saw the name jefferies her first name is joan shes my nan shes safly not with us anymore but i remember my nan tellin me that mrs jacobs ended up at hodge hill girls school...i went to longmeadow in the 80's when it was jus years 4&5 because they was knocking it down?My nan&grandad lived in the house(gilwell road) opposite the school..have fond memories of the school&friends..i remember going to a shakin stevens concert with two girls both called julie...when i left the school we all moved to bournemouth and i sadly lost touch with people..still got memorys..
 
The domestic science room nicely equipped at Longmeadow School in 1956. But sadly not in use due to no specialist teacher! Viv.

Hi, I remember the Javelin incident. I also remember having to leave when I got to 15, after having an accident in Jan 1967.

Hi Jen I can remember during assembly Miss Heatherington threw a Javlin across the stage to warn us how "dangerious"! they were, any one else remember?? Mrs Cooper an art teacher? I remember Mrs Peacock being my art teacher also Mrs Breasley the needlework teacher, I also remember that you were only allowed to do typing if you were going to "stay on" ? needles to say I left and did typing at night school at Alderlea Boys School.

I rememberer a Christine Tustin and her bully friends, made my life hell,I survived that awful schooll well, left B'ham got good job and never looked back.

I was with a Mrs.Pilkington, shorthand and typing, I hated it, somehow don't ask me how I managed it I studied electoral law and retired to South France, despite no female equality then and a lot of bullying I was having every day , it toughened me up for the job I eventually had.

Hi I was a teacher at Longmeadow School in the 1970s. My name was Miss Moriarty and the Mrs De Burgo. I taught Science. Does anyone remember the name of the Head Mistress at this time ?

Hi my name is sue, Mrs jefferies was my nan, my nan and grandad used to live opposite the school on gilwell Road shard end, , she's sadly no longer with us, i attended long meadow in the 80s when it was just 2 years left in the school, 4th and 5th years only, i wasn't there long, but i enjoyed being there, my nan used too tell me some funny and sad stories about her time there,

Mrs jacobs came to hodge hill girls school she was our history teacher I'm pretty sure she was the same one, i left hodge hill girls and went to longmeadow when there was 2 years left the 4th and the 5th year, my nan was mrs jefferies, she's no longer with us sadly but i remember the stories she used to tell me, my nan andd grandad lived in gilwell road facing longmeadow x
