Littlewoods fire

Hi These have been passed down to me by my 84 year old mother , I am trying to locate the year they were taken and where , Could anyone help me please , All Mother can tell me is they were taken in Birmingham by my Grandfather , Thankyou

Think it was Coventry Road opposite Green Lane, Small Heath. Can't remember date.

The information I have puts the fire in 1980, which sounds about right to me as I was having the occasional drink in The Old Gate around that time and I have a memory of the fire or rather the burnt out building.

Looking at the other posts and looking at the vehicles and equipment being used by the fire service I would put the date nearer to the one quoted on Viv's clipping 1980 seems to be very late for the type of equipment being used. Perhaps the derelict buildings I remember were just ones being demolished.

The photo in Phil’s post #5 appears in Small Heath and Sparkbrook through time (by Ted Rudge, Keith Clinton..) which gives an incorrect date of 1980 for the fire (see attachment below). I think the date of the fire was probably confused with the rebuilding date of Littlewoods on the same site. Viv.

The newspaper cutting nicely confirm s the date. Phil was correct regarding the equipment. I note the neighbouring store of Dale Forty was also involved.
