Do you remember those favourite party pieces, that your dad, mom, aunt or uncle did every christmas or at every party? My dad (God bless him) had two. 'Little Pal' by Al Jolson, and 'The Green Eye of The Little Yellow God'. This is part of the first one. The part that always got me, was when he sang 'And if someday you should be on a new daddy's knee, please don't forget about me, little pal. Completely biased, but my dad's version was better than Al's.
Al Jolson's version is on You Tube, but I don't know how to do the link.

My dad would always sing " sonny boy " and also quite a few Irish songs like Danny boy, Kilarney, mother mccree etc. I don't know why because he was Welsh not Irish.

Neither my mom or dad were Irish, but he always sang to mom 'I'll Take you Home Again Kathleen'. I do love 'Danny Boy' sung by the right person. There was a little boy, who sang it to perfection, just two or three years ago.

I almost cried at that song, Ann.
I howled at this, though. I expect your dad was a bit more reverent with the poem.

Yes Ann that brings back Memories of when I used to sing it. My Dad used to sing lots of Comic songs & Mom sang "With Me Sseawead In me Hand." sometimes when I can't sleep I lie in bed trying to remember all their songs.

Was that Declan Galbraith?

Lloyd that is a great link. Very funny. The Green Eye, I remember as the years went on, each year my dad got more outlandish with the piece. The last year, we did it together, completley 'over the top'. Camp wasn't the word. Everyone was in hysterics. It does lend itself to that.
Bramwell these old songs and parlour pieces become very special. I hope you consider recording your version.

Lloyd That was the boy, Declan. He sang it so beautifully. Got to be one of the best versions. One song, in my opinion, Elvis didn't manage. He murdered it.

I'll try and download The Green Eye

Ann - slightly off thread but do you remember the song that was played as Radio Luxenburg clased each night? I think it was called, 'At the end of the day'?

keith

No Keith I don't remember that one. If it's a goodbye song, how about 'For All we Know'

I was more or less brought up in the Bromford Tubes Social Club on Bromford lane( anybody remember that place?) Every Saturday their was a free and easy. This friend of my Mom & Dad would get up on the stage, he would call me up sit me on his knee and sing Sonny Boy, embarrassing or what.
I use to look forward to my Mom singing on stage, after she'd had a couple drinks of course.

Frothy,

Sitting on his knee, while he sang 'Sonny Boy' probably scarred you for life! But bet you looked cute!
Do you remember The Lion and Albert? That was a good one.

This one Ann. I remember listening to it on the old Wireless

Thanks for that link Frothy. A good one. I must learn how to post links mmmm.
I'm going mad trying to remember a long poem about a train. Not the song 'The Runaway Train'.
Ann

My mom always used to recite a poem about a lion called Albert, it was about a little boy that pocked the lion might have got it wrong and the boy was called Albert does anyone recall this one?

My dad used to recite''That yellow eyed monster of Catmandu''and would often sing at christmass ''That Little Boy Who Santaclaus Forgot'Mossy

Patty it was 'The Lion and Albert'. Frothy and Dave have posted very good links for this monologue. Go back a couple of posts.

And Mossy sounds like you are referring to The Green Eye of The Little Yellow God. I've put the words up on page 1.
