Limpet

mw0njm.

A Brummie Dude
hi.i was down the beach today, and a fellow was getting limpets off the rocks.i asked him if they were good bait.he told me he eat them.boiled em and eat them.i love sea food but never eat them things.as any one ever eat them?

Yes, they're a bit chewy but you soon get used to that. When I was a student at Harlech, we used to cook them in their shells, on the hot ashes of a fire, on the beach. You just have to be careful of where you collect them these days. Check for sewer-outlets first!

Since then, I have them in soups and fish stews too. Mind you, it takes awhile to develop the knack of getting them off the rock!

hello johno.i am just up the coast from harlech, water is quite clean do they taste like whelks?

Hi,

They're a little 'meatier' - a bit like scallops, but a tad chewier ... but to be honest, I find most shell-fish to be rather bland. I think they taste more flavoursome when gently roasted. Ideally with a wee drop of Soy sauce, or a pinch of ground black pepper. In the old days I just added the merest smidgin of curry-powder, and closed my eyes before I put them in my mouth! Give them a try.

Where abouts are you from Harlech?

hello.johno,i was going to try one.but when you told me you closed your eyes.i think i will pass.lol

It's just that I'm a bit sqeamish, is all .... do give them a try, they aren't in anyway nasty at all. A little melted butter over them is good too. I do recommend you giving them a try cooked on the beach though, it seems to make them taste even better ... a bit like roasting suds in a bonfire etc.

johno.come next summer when we have a fire and a lot of beer.on the beach.i will try one.they dont seem to have done you or that bloke collecting them
any harm
