GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
I really don't know how to spell this one. Mom did something with them, I hated the smell so couldn't even watch, then gave them to our dog. I'm pretty sure they were for human consumption, but I can't imagine what they were, and they are long gone.

I have always had a cat and for a treat used to buy lites once a week and boil them, they smell was awful, but the various cats I had loved them.
This continued until about 1983 when my beloved little Polly started to lose her balance and went very floppy, she got so bad she couldn't get down the small step into the garden, the Vet gave her various tablets, but then she couldn't eat I fed her with my fingers and a droplet for her milk,
after a further visit to the vet he said he thought it was her nervous system, and advised she was put down, with great reluctance I agreed to save her further distress. Afterwards we heard about BSE in cattle, and I
am convinced that my Polly had a form of this, which I blame on the lites
I fed her. I have never bought any since for the cats I have had since.
 
Offal related BSE/CjD

I think your assumpton may well be correct Sylvia.

As with the human form - CjD - the infected products were eaten, but the manifestation of the symptoms of the disease can be some time after (can be years)

Im sure it was very distressing to watch - its a tragic illness :(
 
Not wanting to drift off topic, but I believe BSE was around for a long time before it hit the headlines.

When living in Ireland during the 70s, I often heard farmers talk of cattle having "the staggers". Then when Britain appeared to be riddled with BSE, the Irish claimed it was unheard of over there. :roll:

I believe it dates back quite far in history Paul, my recollection is that it first manifested in a community that cooked and ate the offal of deceased loved ones
