Lewis's Department Store Free French Exhibition, 1942

Hi all,

Firstly, let me thank you all for giving me access to this wonderful forum. I come to it looking for local knowledge, or perhaps some childhood memories of some members. I think I've discovered something quite exciting, and I hope you'll all be able to help me.

In short, I have found evidence that in 1942, The Free French in Britain - led by Charles de Gaulle - hosted an exhibition of French artefacts on the 5th Floor of Lewis's Department Store - including art by the likes of Cezanne and Monet, and objects detailing of their escape from Vichy France.

I know for a fact that the exhibition itself was opened by Norman Tiptaft, then Lord Mayor of Birmingham, and General Adolphe Sicé of the Free French. As far as I can tell, the exhibition is pretty much forgotten by all major histories of Birmingham, and of De Gaulle and the Free French.

I know its a long shot, but might any of you out there know anyone who witnessed this strange exhibition, or where I might find city records of it happening (one presumes they must have been granted permission by the local council?)

Anyway, I think its quite exciting. Hopefully someone will know something.
