Can anyone suggest a programme i could use for letter writing.

I don't really want to pay hundreds of pounds for a suite of office software
most of which i would never use.

many thanks..

Phil,

I gather that Libre is better than Open Office because the latter hasn't had any updates for sometime, but Libre has. I've downloaded Libre, but haven't got around to using it as I have very little need.

If it's just plain letters and no need to include pictures, then WordPad, part of all versions of Windows, does the job simply and just fine. You can change fonts, font sizes, text colours, add bold, italic & underline - it's only if you need to add pictures that you need something with more functionality.

Hi Maurice,

I had forgotten about Wordpad which is of course built into Windows although you have to dig around to find it in Win 10. Wordpad is ideal for ordinary letter writing.
With regard to Openoffice, I often use it's Spreadsheet which runs just like Excell.

Hi Phil,

Yes, Jan is an Excel king and still occasionally does jobs for other people when they get stuck, but I've never had a great deal of use for it, though used to use Access as a database. It's all horses for courses, and I rarely use anything else for text other than WordPad. It I need lots of pictures then a photo editor does the job well enough.

I use Libre Office and I have done for ages and it does everything I need, which I admit is not a lot. There is also google documents though I have never tried it.

I use 'Microsoft Works 9' which has a great word processor incorporated in it, it is on software kindly forwarded to me by a member who had no use for it few years ago, came with his new PC. Eric

Microsoft works hasn't been free for quite some time.
The official download sites for
Open office https://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html
Libre Office https://www.libreoffice.org/
WPS Office https://www.wps.com/download
Open office has been taken over by apache and the most recent version is dated last October.
I use WPS office on a tablet and it works OK but I haven't tried the Windows version.
If you have a solid online connection and a Hotmail/Outlook/Live or other Microsoft mail account you should also have access to most of Microsoft Office for free. Click on the square of dots on the top left of the page when you've got your email account open.
