Lester Arthur Wilkes 1876

WEDNESBURY GUY
Hi all,

my mother's family is lester. Her family came from west bromwich. My grandfather was alfred hateley lester. He had a brother arthur wilkes lester who married a nellie bloomer in 1907, winson green area. I understand they lived in the birmingham area, my aunt think's saltly area but we are not sure. I would be very interested if anyone knows anything more. In 1911 they were living at sladefield rd washford heath. They had a son harold robert in 1912. Cramorne rd four oaks is another address i have been given. I am afraid the suburbs of birmingham are not familiar with me at all.

Re: Arthur wilkes lester 1876

hello steveo, right up to 1955 (which is as far as the online electoral rolls go at present), arthur and nellie lester were living 220 Sladefield Rd. Washwood Heath.

Re: Arthur wilkes lester 1876

Just checked Kellys directories right up to 1973 and they were still at the same address!

Re: Arthur wilkes lester 1876

Arthur Wilkes Lester died 1970 aged 94 but he is still listed at 220 Sladefield Rd. in 1973. Must have been a bit out of date info!

Re: Arthur Wilkes Lester 1876

Thank you Shera.
Does the Kellys directory give any details of family or occupation's? Do you know what cemetery is near to their home?

I have just been on Genes and gained this info. Arthurs son Harold Robert Lester married a Irene Webber, only married I have found was in Weymouth. Now they had two Daughters (as far as I understand) Doreen Ann Lester 1943, and Susan Irene Lester 1952. Not found any marriages yet.

Re: Arthur Wilkes Lester 1876

Hi

There is a H.R. Lester listed in 1974 & 1975 telephone directory at 30 Cremorne Road, Four Oaks. A death registered in 2001 Bham for a Harold Robert Lester, born 28 Aug 1912 aged 89. Harold Robert Lester is also at 220 Sladefield Road in 1939.

Re: Arthur Wilkes Lester 1876

HI STEVE;
makes Just picked up on your thread regarding arther wilkes and looking at the part where you said there was a west bromwich connection of family
and the winson green mentioned as well ; makes me feel its the same guy and family i knew way back in the sixtys as a friend of this guy
being arther wilkes and his father was arther wilkes as well ; living in winson green ; and a brother living in the border of west bromwich as i seem to recall
as arther and myself went to his bropthers house in west brom ;and on that particular day his brother was out ; so i never got to meet his brother
it was a small house on the same stretch as the albion ground as i recall arther wilkes [ the yung one] was my friend for many years in time gone bye
he was abit of a sad guy really did ot have to many friends in the area even thou te arther wilkes [father and son was both fairly known in winson green area
his father used to lock young arther out of the house because he had a drink problem when is dad was out at work or socialising ;he would lock young arther out [ that being my friend icidently i never drank nor had a drink problem but arther did his father worked but liked the bookies and a couple of pints nothink to heavvy not like young arther problem ; one dat young arther left me and went home two later i met arther on the street he was in a terrible state ; apparently he had been trying to get
into the house eventual he climbed up to a bed room window and got in he found his dad dead in bed ; they livedin poor conditions and spareingly fed themsrlves in a cafe on dudley rd a place called angers cafe opersite the wheatsheaf puf where they drank sangers family worked on the busses all day his family ran it during the day ;
any way young arther got thrown out of the house by the council because it was the family home and he was the only man left a single fella;
they gave him a bed sit up villa rd handsworth by st michaels hill he did not stay long there he got a moved to staple lodge rd a reasonal place i went there
afew times he came to see me fairly often ; he used to get hisdisabilitity money ; for himself ; but like i said arther had a drink problem and it got worsed
afew friends of mine and myself used to give arther money to buy abit of food for his self ; but never dd it was always a pint ; and the beer was his first option ;
but sadly he met a friend over in northfield whomalso had his own place but this big guy abused arther nand taking his money suggested he moves inwith him so arther gave up is council tennacy and fell flat on his facas after a while this guy threw arter out on the street arther went the same way as his dad and went like a skeleton ; and i never seen him any more i searched for him but to no avail i can only presume arther as died ; he was never sen againby any one
at themoment i am trying to think of his brothers name ; but also i think his brother was a painter and decorator with his own bussiness and well established
that being the brother whom lived in west bromwich 'this was in the sixtys and seventys i last seen young arthur in the late seventys ; he asked a friend of mine for some work ; but he knew of arther and his father and the drink he declined to give him work ;
so the father lived in heath street winson green up until the sixtys with young arther then the young arther moved to villa rd and ended up at staple lodge rd northfield in the seventys
but thats why i think if i am right it was robert or steven was is brothers name but he always saidhis brother in west bromwich never wanted nothink to do wit him and his brother was married young arther never got married young arther was a weak kind of guy land never really looked after himself
his father was a good clean man and always worked ; best of luck and best wishes astonian;;
