Does anyone have any links with Frederick Legge, who moved here from Herefordshire with his wife Edith (nee Suff) I think in the 1890's. He lived in Small Heath. He would be my great-uncle.
Thanks!
Jan

Yo Janet :) Frederick & Edith lived @ 299 Clifton Road ,Balsall Heath (St Pauls) B,ham in 1901
Parts of Balsall Heath & Small Heath,,merged/changed with Electoral boundaries/years
Census ref is RG13 piece 2811 folio 19 page 30

Frederick Legge age 26, Gun"filer/Unclear", Wife Edith age 27 Woodwork Machinist,,with them was Elizabeth Suff age 19 Sister-in-Law a Dressmaker.
This gives you a firm base for further researching, Good Luck JohnY:cool:

Thanks John! Mind you, it will be hard to move on from 1901 as the next census won't be available for another 3 years. Still, who knows, someone out there might know more!
regards
Jan :)

Hi Janet :) You can trace them through Electoral Rolls at B,ham Library,
1911 census a long wait yet,, They,re still working out how to charge us Both arms & legs !!!!

Hopefully other Listers/viewers will know more on your LEGGE enquiry,
Cheers JohnY

:D Is the arms and legs (Legges?) comment a mistake or a joke?! Funny though! Is there a thread anywhere about unusual surnames I wonder.
I shall take your advice - thanks.
Jan

Hi Jan.

My paternal grandmother was Lily Susan Legge, born Portsea Island (Hampshire) in 1873. She moved around the country in domestic service in her early years, and at some point she arrived in Birmingham and married a man called Cowell, probably around 1900-1905. She had two sons by that marriage, my dad's half-brothers. (One of them, Harold Cowell, was a well-known publican in Brum, keeping amongst other pubs The Britannia on Lichfield Road, and The Lion and Lamb and The Antelope in Sparkhill). Mr Cowell died, and she re-married to a William Bryant who was my grandfather, but about him I know absolutely nothing except that he came from Barnet, Hertfordshire. I'd be interested to know if you come across her in the course of your research.

If anyone reads this who can throw some light on William Bryant, I'd be more than interested. They lived in Aston (Frederick Road, I believe) and Montague Street (Balsall Heath or thereabouts).

I had a bit of a smile at the surname Suff, because in old Brummie a 'suff' is a drain....no offence meant.

Regards,

Big Gee

Hi Big Gee (interesting username - I won't ask)! Obviously - I would say - a different branch of the Legge family; I wonder what the name really means! "My" lot were originally from Shropshire, before My gg grandfather Thomas moved to Kington Herefordshire, met my gg grandmother and so on. Good luck with your research!

I f you go onto Birmingham Librarys website and ask for a lookup on the electoral roll for an address, if you have one as long as the search doesn't take to long they are very good. They e-mailed me back on a query very promptly.

Hi Jan,

My gran's family were very itinerant - although she was born on Portsea Island they soon moved to Dartmoor, where he dad worked as a warder at the prison. Interestingly, my gran used to tell us that when the family moved to London (or nearby) they travelled by coaster boat, because the rail-fare was too expensive!

I don't know of any Shropshire connection, but you never know.

I don't know what the name means either, but I'm sure a search of the net will dredge up some clues.

Big Gee
