Hi all

Thanks for all of your efforts on finding details regarding Horace.

What was a general dealer? Is 139 Dudley Road still there?

hi kat bit of a clue in the title...it was a general stores..sold a bit of everything...i would be very surprised if 139 dudley road is still standing

In that case they must have renumbered the area around there, for, as you can see, there is now nothing between the canal and Heath St.

Thanks Mike, I wonder what year it would have gone. I thought it looked like it had been demolished going by the modern map, but not knowing the area, I didn't know.

Hi all

I would like to know if anyone has info or pics of The Lee Bridge Tavern?

Had it always been the Lee Bridge Tavern?

Horace Strawbridge (died, KIA 1917) had a general store opposite the pub. He must have used the pub so I would love to find out anything I can.

Hi, I've found some info, Lee Bridge Tavern was built in 1919, as Mikejee pointed out some time ago. But hopefully there may still be pics of the pub with other buildings. I live in hope.

Did you know his wife Minnie was listed under "laundries" at 31 Winson Green Road? This was in 1913 Kelly's when he was listed at 139 Dudley Road.

The date at the top of the building clearly says 1919 so there is date confirmation. The tramcar (looks like it is car 89?) built 1906/7 is turning into Dudley Road from Heath street of the 31 route which apparently was an infrequent service.. This was replace on 10/9/39 by bus route B83. Tram 89 was one of those stored for emergency use during WW2
The lower picture in post 3 is the oldest view I believe as it show an older style lamp post, the tram stop sign and the metal cabinet associated with the tramway overhead.
Phil's photo post 4 is summer 1939, before the abandonment of the Dudley Road routes in September 1939 but showing signs already of preparations for the imminent war. The white painted fender and what appears to be an APR or air raid poster on the traction pole. Two trams stops are in the photo, one opposite the tram the other in Dudley Road immediately before the junction with Heath Street.
The upper photo of post 3 is post war if the clothing is a guide. The tram tracks have gone, the traction poles and cabinet together with the tram stop plates are also gone.

Thanks Phil and Radiorails. Great pics. Really thrilled with those. Phil I have seen one of the pics you posted before, but not both, so thanks again. Phil the last photo with the tram on shows some of the buildings to the right which is where Horace Strawbridge had his general stores.

Please if anyone has anymore pics or info, I would like to see it.

kat i cant say for certain but looking at mikes map on your other thread i think the shop on the corner called furniture land is at no 141 making your no 139 just out of shot...would need confirming though as i could be wrong

yes as we all know when searching for photos janice..so near yet so far but as you say i think we can just see an edge to no 139..may as well post the map as well

Thanks to all looking for pics, yes, I thought that the 139 premises was just out of shot, as the numbers will be odd on that side of the road. What would the road be called opposite Heath Street, perhaps a shot taken from that road may show the 139 premises.

An aerial view dated 1947 of the area shown in the map in post#21. Heath Street coming in from top left and No 139 the second house along from the railway embankment.

I don't know this area at all, but if I am correct it is just a load of trees & bushes on that corner surrounded by fencing & railings on Google StreetView

Kat,

I missed my late father's older brother's haulage business at 56 Sherborne Street around that date - the site foreman for the yuppie development of that area told me that they had demolished his old business just three months before I arrived on site. It can be very frustrating.

What shall I do radiorails? Edit - posts about the 'General Stores' moved from memorial thread to this thread.

I'm so fascinated by the pics. Thanks again. It's just great knowing what the Street looked like.

It looked so alive and full of character.
