I knew of it and heard it as a child and was going to post last year in the Brummie Sayings & Language thread but could not think how it was spelt so I didn't post.
I think it's definitely out of use these days, but you never know it might come back, or the Aussie's could find a use for it!

As a child I lived in Cleeve Road Yardley Wood, our next door neighbour
Ivy Dickinson always called it Lar Pom, we always thought it was something to do with it being outside the back door, have not heard the
expression for almost 60 years!!! Makes me smile when the Americans go
to "The John". In Egypt we used to fill them in every so often and dig a
new one!

I stumbled on this one when using google to establish the origin of the term.
And up pops this forum.
So, it was a common phrase for the bog when I was growing up in Ladywood in the 50s but our degeneration was Larm pom.
Has to come from the forces and france is a guess.
