Just got back from a look at ladypool road and the imediate area around.
My father was brought up at number 62 which would be the bottom (stratford Road end). It seems as though a good number of the houses at that end have been buldozed and replaced.
Would anyone have one of those maps that show where the numbers of houses were, or better still a photograph of that end of ladypool Road.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the dental surgery Burdens ice cream shop, best ice cream for miles, even better than Henley in Arden.

Darby,

The dental surgery looks to be on the corner of Ombersley Rd, I thought Burdens was on the corner of St Pauls Rd. I may be wrong , as the brain gets foggier the older I get.

You are right about one thing, it was the best ice cream you could buy for miles. I remember the queue's outside.

Burden's

Darby, pmc1947

You're right Burden's was the best ice cream, not for miles, but in the world and they won many world wide gold medals to prove it. I have been in many countries and not yet found anything near as good as Burdens:P

Hi
Burdens was at the bottom of Oldfield Road, my Mom worked there for some years before taking on Mays Cafe at the bottom of Tillingham Street. She is 91 now but still has an interest in Ladypool Road, Ombersley Road & what was Tillingham Street. Don Maclean was born in Ombersley Road & the former Warwickshire wicketkeeper Geoff Humpage in Tillingham Street.
I will be pleased to hear from anyone who remembers me or my family, I was born in Ombersley Road & my Mom in Tillingham Street. Moms name before she was married was Foster
I attended Clifton Road & then Waverley Grammar School I still have some contact with Chris Sullivan & Graham Webb but would like to hear from others.
Look forward to hearing from anyone.

Hi daverock

I used to use May's café a lot in the early 70's, we used to have breakfast there nearly everyday. Ask your mom if she remember Phil & Dave who used to come in, We would normally arrive in a skip lorry.

Hi Dave great to see you on here, what took you so long? That's very strange as only yesterday I was thinking of posting that photo you gave me of us sitting in the classroom at Clifton Road Junior School. Dave have you had a look at this thread yet? https://forum.birminghamhistory.co.uk/showthread.php?t=14281&highlight=Dennis+road+school

I didn't know that one of my favourite singer, Don McClean, was from our neck of the woods. Thanx and welcome to the forum. [ame="https://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=dipFMJckZOM"]YouTube - Vincent (Starry Starry Night) Don McLean[/ame]

Hi Phil
My Mom remembers you vaguely, do you have a picture of yourself you can send me. The Cafe closed in 1976 & Mom retired, sadly my Dad passed away in 1980, do you remember him.
What school diod you go to?
Look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers

Hi
Don Maclean the comedian is who I meant , he was born in Ombersley Road & attended Clifton Road school.
I still see Don occasionally & he is a very nice friendly Brummie & still lives in the Solihull area.
Cheers

Dave sorry for the mix up, I know that we have had a lot of good comedians (that has a different, bad, meaning in Flemish but that's another story. Lol.) from our area, but I don't know the one you are talking about.

Graham.

Kev

William Jones, the butcher, who Samuel Ruscoe is working for in the 1911 census I sent you, was based in Broad Street, Knighton, Radnorshire, not Ladypool Rd, Samuel appears at Ladypool Rd in 1920. Have a look at the email I just sent you:)

I just realised, this stuff is so hard to follow, but addictive,
Thank you again Suzanne

Dave

I have only just saw your post about a photo for your mom to see if she recognises us, if you send me an email address I will forward one of Dave and myself. I went to Dennis Road School of course. Didn't everybody.

such a lot going on in this pic...

taken from a 1997 old brum newspaper....ladypool road sparkbrook...

Lyn, I'm sure that my step brother-in-law's shop is in that photo. I think that it's my old street, Leamington Road, is in the background, Here is a photo of Ladypool Road that I made during my visit to Brum for the '60's night', Nov 2008. And one of the corner Leamington and Ladypool Road in 2008.

I worked in Ladypool Rd in the early 60's. It was at Richards radio & TV shop, sadly I can't remember which road it was on the corner of. Mr Richards was a short fatish man who was very pleasant and his shop manager was a Mr Tebbutt. Strange how I remember their names but not where the shop was! No pictures either.

Thank you for telling me about the thread Cadeau. It reminded me that there was a smaller shop at the southern end of the Ladypool Rd, They sold the secondhand sets that had been taken in part exchange for newer ones, refurbished and sold on. Probably can't do that these days.
