I am interested to know exactly how far kings Norton stretched to in 1917+ Most of my husbands family originate from the Smethwick area but according to the ancestry web site ,the certificates say Kings Norton. I have applied to Birmingham Registry office for a Birth & Marriage Certificate but they do not have what i am looking for. I am wondering if i might have to apply to Sandwell.
 
Hi yogimon - I had to order a birth certificate for a relative born at an address in Smethwick and found the Registration District was KINGS NORTON. Sub District HARBORNE. County of STAFFORD. To be sure I had the right place I ordered mine on line from GRO: https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
I received it in less time than quoted but I suppose that depends on how busy they are.
 
Thanks Pollypops. did you order the standard certificate? and did it have all the info you needed because i was told if you order on line you only get a small certificate with very minimal info. i need as much as poss.
 
As far as I know all certificates ordered from GRO or the district offices are the same - they are a photocopy of all the details entered in the Register on the day the birth was registered.
The certificate I have (birth 1885) has DOB, address where born, child's full name, sex, fathers name, mothers name and maiden name, fathers occupation, informants name and address, the date of registration and the registrars signature.

Perhaps the person who told you about the standard/small certificate is getting confused with when you register a baby you are issued with a short certificate - which just shows the date, baby's name and where born but you can also pay for a full certificate which shows the parents details etc.

I am sure other members on here have more experience of ordering certificates than me though, so they may know more.
 
I will send for one and see what happens.. according to what information you have on your's i think that will be ok..no harm in trying
 
I have a marriage certificate for my grandmother's first marriage dated 1913. It states that they were married at the Register Office of The Kings Norton District in the Parish of Birmingham in the County Borough of Birmingham. This makes sense as they both lived in Smethwick which at that time came under the Kings Norton Registration District. Does anyone know where the Kings Norton Registry Office was situated at that time please? The reference to the PARISH of Birmingham confuses me as Kings Norton was never in the parish of Birmingham.
 
The registrar of births and deaths for the Kings Norton sub district is listed in the 1913 Kellys as Charles T.David.at "Burnaston, Middleton Hall road, which corresponds today to no 138. It does not mention marriages. Superintendent Registrar for Marriages for the Kings Norton district is listed as R.F Curtis at 100 Edmund St, so I presume marriages were conducted at Edmund St
 
Thanks Mike. So it looks as if Kings Norton Registr5y office had moved into the centre of Birmingham even if it had not yet been legally merged with the Birmingham Registration District

It seems to be listed with the Birmingham registration district see below from 1913 kellys

I have death certs of three relatives who all died within a month of each other. Two died at home in Smethwick and are registered in Birmingham South Registration District and one died in Dudley Road Hospital less than a mile way and was registered in Birmingham North Registration District. The registration districts appear to follow the old Poor Law Unions which was why Smethwick was included in Kings Norton so I presume that Smethwick did not become a registration district in its own right until it became a county borough.
