Key Hill Cemetery Memorial Inscriptions

Hi Wendy & Brian,
I did some look-ups recently at BMSGH, but I've made a mistake with one of them, I've written P4 in Warstone for Robert Inwood who died in 1875, but there isn't a P4 is there!! His relative Eliza is P1868 (died 1897) so I should have realised at the time that the number was wrong. My 2xGt Grandmother married him, lived with another man and then marrried my 2xGt Grandfather bigamously!! She's in Warstone (Selina Yapp) but her grave was forfeit and was re-used, then the stone was buried.

There must be some wonderful stories buried along with the "residents"!!

Hi Wendy
I would love to know if there are any for Wilstrop or Willstrop in the list.
Thanks for the offer.
Best wishes
Penny

Hi Rosie, you not actually wrong - I met a chap last Sunday in KH looking for a Westley - sent him to Colin @ the Pen Room, and later met him again in WL looking for 2 graves in P4 - which he found! Unsure if they are related to Westly Richards, Gunsmiths, but are thinks they are related to Westly the Brum Map maker.

AS you are aware, the "Registers"for WL are actually the Cah Books, they are specifically to record Costs & Payments . Quite often on a page of 30 Burials - only 4 may have a grave number showing!! There would, originally, have been other Registers cross referencing everything - by date, name, grave number, etc. Sadly - there wherabouts is unknown - This is why so much data at WL is incomplete.

What we have discovered is that in the early days of operation, each Section was divided into 4 'Segments' P1, P2, P3, P4 - At the time, that was probably enough info, as the funerals would be current, but over time, becomes meaningless!
Ralph Heaton of the Mint is listed like this- It took a lot of cross searching to find his actual Grave Number.

The known graves in P4 are behind the mint, on the left facing downhill, Pemberton st side, just where there is a 'step' in the level of graves.
If you follow the dirt path down towards the large 'Compost heap' - you will see the dsudden drop in grave levels - like a min cliff, on your right - have a good search!

If you find the grave, cross referance to one with a number on and let me know, so we can update the BMSGH data.
Also we often find some names on a memorial listed with grave numbers, and others on the same memorial shown as "No grave number showing" in the Registers!

You may find them all in P1868 - it's in the right area - or they could be separate graves near each other - The Westley's had 1 grave between them!

Brian

Hello Penny hope this helps.

Arthur George Wilstrop grave no 9 section O. In loving memory of Arthur George Wilstrop who died 12th July 1891 aged 14. Headstone.

Betsy Wilstrop buried 1874 grave no 29 section L vault.

Henry Wilstrop buried 1894 section S grave no 2.

Sorry posted after you Brian.

Brian could I please ask you to look in your book for Warston lane Cemetry for a child buried there between 1931-1941 The name could be Valerie Bowen or maybe a still born birth. Thank you.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for that, I know where you mean. I haven't been to WL since I did the look-up, on the map the other one seems to be just off the path so I will have a look next time. I should have checked whether it was a public one or not.
rosie.

Hi Rosie,
Here are all the Inwoods - mostly in same area but differant Graves?
Eliza 1878 C 220 23562 5
Eliza 1897 P 1868 51928
Fredk Edward 1878 P 1845 24102
Jane 1884 P 1361 34078
Robert 1875 P 4 18754

There is a chance Robert & Eliza are in the same one - It's worth a look. although none are shown as MI?, you may find Headstones in place still!
The 1878 Eliza is with 2 Pooles', a White & a Holliday?

Hi Brian,
The Eliza with 2 Pooles would probably be his "other" wife, with her parents as that was her maiden name. He had a sister Eliza too, she didn't marry as far as I know .
I'm not sure about the others though, but with their History anything is possible!! I'll have a look on FMP and they might be related. Selina's daughter Selina Dianna Inwood is in a public in Key Hill, E45, by the wall.

Hi again Brian,
I've just had a quick look on FMP and both Jane and Frederick Edward were under the age of one.

Hi Brian & Wendy

Thank you both very much for this. Back in about 1971 when I was still at a very early stage of my family tree I visited Birmingham very briefly and was sure that I had seen the grave of Betsy but when I have been back to Birmingham I have never been able to find any Willstrops there. I am sure too that I saw one for Rosanna Willstrop somewhere - she was my 3xgreat grandmother. Rosanna's husband, Thomas Willstrop, is buried with two of their daughters in St Paul's Churchyard. I shall have to visit again!

I am so pleased!

Penny

Hello Penny hope this helps.

Arthur George Wilstrop grave no 9 section O. In loving memory of Arthur George Wilstrop who died 12th July 1891 aged 14. Headstone.

Hello Wendy/Brian again
Just been checking my tree against the information you and Brian have given me and something is strange! I only have one Arthur George Willstrop in my tree and he married and then died in Birmingham in 1931 aged 64. If this Arthur George was 14 and died in 1891 he was born 1877. I do have a George Willstrop born in London in 1876 but he died in 1923 in Portsmouth! There must be an answer :) I shall just have to think harder.
Penny

Hi Penny, it's such an unusual name, I'm sure they are all distant relatives.
There are almost no headstone now in St Pauls - been 'tidied up' but they have got records - check online for their website.
Unsure of betsey has a headstone - will look on Tuesday when I go through KH.

Brian

Hi Penny,
It's good to be back on air = Thank god some people understand the mechanics of these machines!
Just hope we managed to find some twigs for your tree, even if they aren't the branch you were looking for - makes it all a bit bushier though!
Brian

Hi Brian
Yes, really good to have the forum back.

I keep thinking I have found most of my twigs and then another one pops up!

Cheers
Penny

Hello Wendy
I am very new to this so hope this is ok. Would you please look to see if there is any record at Key Hill, of Jane Louisa Baggallay who died in 1913, or her husband John Baggallay who died in 1916.
Thank you
Sue

Hello Sue welcome to the forum. I have checked Key Hill cemetery records and they are not interred there.

There is only one person buried with a name close to Baggallay. Hugo Baggaley buried 1864 in vault 22. I have also checked Warstone Lane they are not recorded there either.

Hi Wendy, thankyou for your offer, not sure if weve been intouch before but here is what im looking for if you can help ?
I have under the heading BIRMINGHAM UNIVERSITY John Charles 1951 K 34 100050 what type of grave would this be and would there be an inscription ?
many thanks Anita

I have checked the memorial inscriptions for Key Hill cemetery and there is a Parks family in grave 34 section K. Is Charles the surname of John. Can you tell me where the information is from. I assume 100050 is the register number.

Hi Anita,
K 34 in key hill has 3 Parkes in it -
K 34 - In affectionate memory of Jane the beloved wife of John PARKES who departed this life January 10th 1880 in the 42nd year of her age. Also of the above John PARKES who died December 26th 1921 in the 87th year of his age. "In thee O Lord I put my trust." Also Ann Louisa PARKES second wife of the above who died August 8th 1939 aged 75 years. "Until the day dawn and the shadows flee away." Notes: - 6' headstone with side pillars base kerbs and flat stone. Extant memorial. 62" headstone, laid down. Single tier base

100050 is a Warstone Lane Burial Number

SHUTTLEWORTH - John Charles 1951 K 34 100050. He is not shown as a Birmingham University burial.
Birmingham University burials are those bodies used for medical research, which are gioven to students at start of term (1 body per 2 students), but which must be returned - with all bits and pieces - for a Christian burial before end of term exams.

John Charles Shuttleworth is not shown as one of these. He would appear to be someone who died with little or no money, and possibly no known relatives.
The Council reopened the Public vaults around the side of the catacombs and 'topped them up' with the cheaper (and less profitable) burials, during the 1950's & 1960's. There is a memorial but it will be those original occupants from the early 1900-1920's who had paid extra to have their name on the memorial - Leslam has posted pics of these under Warstone Lane Catacombs / vaults somewhere.

Hope this helps.

Brian

Thankyou Brian, John Charles would of been an uncle, he died at about 5 months,
My Mothers Brother, I still have all the receipts etc for his funeral/coffin . The family wasnt wealthy but i wondered if there was an inscription.

thanks again anita
