Key Hill Cemetery - Birmingham in Bloom

The boarder looks lovely and will look even better when all the flowers are out - thanks for posting the picture. Is there a map available marking out the Birmingham in Bloom trail? Have you noticed any more visitors to the cemetery? :)
 
This sounds wonderful. Will certainly have a trip down. As a lot of my ancestors seem to be buried at Key Hill, or Warstone Lane, will be part of my searches.
 
However..... I thought the Bed was looking very green and bulked up.....couldn't see the Bogenia's - had they Be Gone?,
and where were all the Marigolds? Buried under the washing u p ??

Some one has snuck in and filled it with WEEDS! - There's more Docks than at Dover ! - And no Passport Control! - And there sneaky nettles mixed in to get you - Private Security -

Where have they all come from - I don't recall the Kiddies planting them! - Pherhaps it's something they've put in the Water!!!!!!!!!!
 
BY an amazing coincidence, when i got home and decided I'm gonna have to get on my knees and scrabble about in the Dahlia's - I get's an email from a new member - David Lewis - offering a days work in Key Hill as a bonus payment for the restoration of his family memorial I 137 on the Icknield St frontage, just along from the Flower Bed.
In all fairness David did most of the digging up of his relatives - and he bought his own shovel! - he was so pleased he instantly ordered the restoration of it, which nicely fell in with the visit of Memsafe a couple of weeks ago!

David at work!, The guilty culprits are finally in the Bag! The Marigolds can see the light again! The Begonia's are Be Back! But the central Cordyline is still well hidden by the Dahlia's

View attachment 70305 I think I can see where the draught's coming from !.......... Metal thefts - Thieves leave gaping hole in Gates - It is being looked into!

Not the Flower Bed - but whilst I was busy filling my arms with netles stings - these chaps came along looking for the Key Hill entrance. They have been contracted to quote on the metalwork repairs needed for the Key Hill Entrance restoration. They will be replacing the missing pieces, and any missing fence finials....

I wondered about the wholly gates when we came up to KH..but I forgot to ask you about them.
Norm took photos while we were there but I have a feeling they are going to be too big to upload as I have tried from his posh camera before...any ideas on making them smaller ??

My Dad always used to ask if I was born a field, whenever I left the door open! Think he had a point!

When my Pics get rejected from uploading due to size, Imusually open them with Picture manager, abd edit them, cropping the edges off, after saving they are usually small enough to looad up.

No doubt there are more proper ways to do this, but not reknowne for technical abilities - unless it's with a pair of secateurs or a shovel!

I imagine the gates wil;l be repaired over the winter like last time, barricaded out of use for 3 months in case anything drops on your head in the oment you pass through!

Will keep everyone advised once things happen!

3 Months on - some serious weeding, some light pruning (now I know which dahlia things to pull off - pointy not round!!) and it's still looking great
Views from the the Flat, Icknield St, and towards Icknield St (Shady side - you can see where the dahlia's are all looking to wards the the sunny Flat).

Info board never turned up - but we know it's part of Birmingham in Bllom - Jewellery Quarter flower trail !
 
Brian it still looks lovely and makes the cemetery look so much brighter. Is it not possible to keep the garden after the flower trail.
 
Still looking good Brian. I should think the dahlias could be lifted and stored away in the winter, ready for planting out again?

Dahlias should be lifted after the first good frost brushed down and stored keep them dry but aired. Dek
 
Looks like another volunteer job...I must make an effort when I have finished decorating the spare room for the grandchildren.
 
What a beautiful job you have all done.
I went to Castle Bromwich today to look for the grave of Joshua Poole( I have posted on that thread earlier)
the churchyard/cemetery there is a disgrace.
 
It is such a shame the problem with churchyards they belong to the church and it's up to them to maintain it. I think if people were more aware I am sure they would volunteer to look after it. It always amazes me driving through the country side some graveyards are beautiful while others are a disgrace.

Just shows what a friends group can do if the right people are at the helm!
