Key Hill Cemetery - Birmingham in Bloom

Brian fantastic work, news and finds. As you say more luck than Time Team well done! As Lyn says you all deserve this a bonus for all your hard work. I can't wait to see the flower bed.
See you tomorrow at the Birmingham Lives History Fair....to do me bit!

Brian, puts a new angle on pushing up the daisies lol
Seriously, I think it's a great thing to do and the finds as well make it a really big issue - hope it is going to get some media coverage for you.
I have never been to Key Hill, none of our families lived that side of town, but must put it on the list of places to visit, really need a few weeks off to se them all.
Good luck with the rest of the work, keep us posted if you aren't too exhausted!!
Sue

I'm soooo jealous sitting here would love to be helping with the dig and stuff... went to Key Hill with Wendy exactly four years ago when I was over in 2007. You have done so much cleaning up of the place since then , so would love to came again if I can save my pennies sometime.

Lyn didn't know you had 'Wood's ' in your tree, we could have a connection with the name as mine lived in the area too.

Polly not sure how much of our 'Deakin' family you have researched, but if your looking for your 'Thomas aged 4' in 1861... James (Sam and Tom's Dad) has been miss transcribed as Francis Deakin. When looking at the original I can see how it happened unless you knew like us that it should be James.

Brian sorry to have gone a little off topic... didn't mean to high-jack your thread. Mind some of these family members could well be residents at Key Hill :). Keep up the good work folks it's well appreciated even 12000 miles away.

oops sorry bri i thought it was wendy who had posted the harrington list for me...

thanks bri but no luck so far....

lyn

hi chris...yes wood was our moms maiden name....when you have time maybe you could im me with a couple of names to see if we have any connection with the the woods....i would have expected to see some at key hill as they lived over that way but like i said wendy could find none some time back...

View attachment 68566 The days 'finds' - ceramics (part mug?), Clay pipe bowl with separate stem, herbal remedy paste pot for almost every ailment, 2 small glass bottles marked London one side & Judson t'other.!

Research, sorry work continues on Monday, hopefully when 'mick the Dig' aka the man with the JCB arrives courtesy of Witon cemetery (fingers crssed - pretty please)

Brian, I'm now curious about the Beadle's Hut and what a Beadle did at the cemetery. Was the hut a sort of shelter? And do you know if the Beadle(s) had a ceremonial role or more than that? Viv.

My great uncle was a Beadle at a church in the Staffs moorlands, his duties as a lay person were to assist the Vicar and see that the church and surrounds were in good order.
I believe the ones in Churchyards and cemeteries were equivelant to our security guards or night watchmen.

Ah yes, that makes sense Alberta. I expect they were needed to prevent bodies being stolen for research etc. in the 1800/1900s. Viv.

The bottles may be 'gum' bottles. Here's one c1880 (a slightly different shape but still Judson's London). What did they need gum for? The mind boggles! Viv

Hi Viviene,

Just got in from History fair, and my model soldiers club!

The Beadles were like Harry Secombe in Oliver Twist - Local Bouncer!
We know they had fancy overcoats and hats, and acted as a doorman/bouncer minding the nmain cemetery entrance. Presumably opening/closing gates, unlocking/locking up, security patrols (mostly people nicking the flowers and reselling them!)

We have a poor dark pic showing the hut, with a fany roof - like a gate security office at a warehouse. What sort of gum did Judsons do? glue sniffing stuff, or for sticking posters up with or sumat?

The bottles, pipe, ointment jar could be from almost any period, current with useage, or rubbish after it was demolished.

I haven't been there today, but imagine we have a nice outdoor Lido at the moment!

Brian

Hi Brian. Thanks for the Beadle info. On the bottles, I just had a poke around on google to see if I could find anything like your 2 bottles. I thought the shape was interesting. The 1880 example was the only thing I could find that even vaguely resembled yours. I can't find any info on "Judsons" though. So afraid I don't know much else. Better get your cozzie out for tomorrow, make good use of that Lido!! Viv.

Brian, I have been searching for "Glass Gum Bottles" and I have found some that refer to them as ink bottles. I have also found that Gum - often Gum Arabic is added to ink to thicken it.
Could they be old ink bottles?

Sounds plausable Poll they could have been Mr Mannings as he was a prolific writer. Did you see the opaque glass with letters on, I would love to know where that came from, I think we will have to get time team in....lol

Brian showed me a small pot that had instructions about ointment on it - is that the one?:)
I can't remember exactly what it said so I can't search for info on it.

I have just remembered - there is a photo of Manning at his desk - are the bottles on it?

I have just had a look at the photo sadly not a bottle in sight!

Strange though as this time I studied the photo and realised the object I couldn't identify on his desk is the knob from the top draw in front of him. :)
