a general question...
does anyone know what was the criteria to be listed in Kelly's directory?

My gr. grandfather Jeremiah Jones was listed residing on Mary Vale Road for 1903 and 1904.
if anyone knows how a person would be included in the directory. Was it for tradesmen only?
thank you
SR

You were included in a kellys if you were a house owner (court) or had a firm (trades) the original Mr Kelly worked for the Post Office so what he did was to get his information from the post men who worked for the Post Office

Do you know how strict the criteria for entry in above Kelly's would have been followed? The ancestor above was listed in census records as an iron foundry worker + did live at Mary Vale Road.
Is there any way to find if he had a shop of his own or where he might have worked...?
They lived at the Mary Vale Road address for several years and also on Bournville Lane (just the other side of train tracks from Mary Vale Road) and later at Rose Cottage.

Haven't found anything to say that he was ever employed at Cadbury though other family members were.
If anyone knows of iron foundries in the area of these addresses, would appreciate knowing of them.
Thank you
SR

There is a brass foundry and an ammunition works (Kynoch's) shown on the c 1904 OS map just south of Mary Vale road, and the Kings Norton metal Co off Lifford lane. The last of these seems to be an ammunition works in 1921 , but not sure whether it was the same in 1904. But at that time , with regular trains to Bournvile and Lifford station people could live some distance away from their works, so it could be a foundry near the centre. If he is listed with no trade given then I would be reasonably sure it was a private address.
