The firm of Joseph Whitten came under discussion in the thread William Devenport. Here are a few discoveries that may be useful for further research.

1839 – Joseph Whitten, jeweller, Church Street.

1856 – (probably) Joseph Whitten, Spencer Street.

1866 – Advertising for a skilled gold ear-ring cutter.

1870 – Manufacturing Jeweller, Spencer Street.

1880/81 – Partnership with William Devenport dissolved.

1888 – Kelly’s Directory lists Joseph Whitten, jeweller, Spencer Street.

1896 – Silver vesta case attributed to Joseph Whitten.

1897 – Silver pepper shaker by Joseph Whitten….There are also references to Whitten pieces from the 1890s in collectors’ and hallmark discussions.
