Hi, I'm looking for Joseph Bird who was a gun engraver in Birmingham. He appears on the 1871 census but not 1881. I know he was still alive as we have him as a witness to a family wedding in 1882 in Birmingham. I thought he might be mentioned in the 1880 directory.Can anyone help?

In the 1865 directory there is a Bird Joseph,Gun Engraver, 30 Newton St,
In the 1873 directory there is a Bird Joseph, Gun Engraver, 31 1/2 Whitall St
in the 1888 there is Bird Joseph, Gun Stocker, 107 back of Steelhouse Lane,

Thank you for that info - I wonder where he was in 1881?? His wife is there but not Joseph.

In 1880 and 1882 he is also listed in Kellys at 31½ Whittal St (with another 6 people working on different aspects of gun manufacture) In 1883 & 1884 he is there with 10 other people listed.

Pick, do you have a date of birth? Even an approximate one might help locate him if he is out of Birmingham in 1881
 
Yes, he was born in 1836. I have searched all over in the 1881 census. I think he has simply been missed off the return. The place in Whittall street, no.31 1/2 , where he is in 1882, seems to be a work place for those in the gun trade - I wondered if he actually slept there as that would explain him not being on the census with his wife. Some of the other gun workers in the same building appear on the census at other addresses but he does not.
